Hidden Partition - Can be acessed?

#1 Post by hanzo » Wed Jul 13, 2005 4:35 am

Hello,

I have a Thinkpad T41, which of course has only 35GB of available space, from its native 40. What is the thing with this hidden partition? Can it be accessed, modified or deleted?

I had no succes in finding it. Partition Magic 7 can't see it, Redhat can't see it ....

Any suggestion? A new version of PM or Linux will be more successfull?

Thanks

Try disabling the hidden partition in BIOS and look for the freed up space in partition magic.

Although if you do have it, it sounds like you should have less than 35GB shown in windows.

I was surprised to find that I had no problem at all seeing and even reading the HPA/R&R partition while it was set top "Secure" or hidden.

I didn't try writing to it, but it was certainly rteadable in full. I dumped it off with Linux 'dd' and burned it to DVD, then disabled and reclaimed it.

Perhaps it's write protected only? The feature made it sound like it would be hidden, but it was there plain as day -- hda2, the second primary partition. It's FAT32.

Thank you all.
I can activate it from bios and then use Partition Magic, or, as I discovered right now, Suse 9.3 sees it even if it is hidden.
If I ever need more space now I know what to do. For the moment it stays there.

I was just wondering if I can copy the hidden partition so that I can have it on a upgraded hard disk.

If you use the system recovery disks that you can creat (one time) when you get your ThinkPad, they will creat the factory setup which includes the hidden partition and its contents on a new unformatted, unpartitioned disk.
