T40p is not able to read burnt DVDs

I've bought the DVD writer NEC 3540 and use it as an external device over USB2.0 on my T40p. But the Combo-Drive of the T40p can't read the burnt DVDs. I've tried DVD-R as well as DVD+R and have used different writing speeds, but without success.

Do you guys have any idea what I can do?

Which external DVD-Burners do you use? Or can this be an error of the T40p drive?

I used to have a T21 that doesn't read burn DVD's, I update the DVD firmware and solve the problem.
