Ebay auction fan - work with T21 1.0ghz??

#1 Post by wogeboy » Thu Jul 14, 2005 2:10 pm

Hey all,
I have a T21 with a 850mhz ...I have in my hands a 1.0ghz (100fsb) CPU that will work, however do I need to replace the current fan? There is a fan on ebay but not sure if it any different than what I have...any input will be greatly appreciated...ebay auction:

I replaced the 800Mhz CPU in my T21 with a 1Ghz - I have installed as standard the fan system you are looking at on Ebay. Idle, my new CPU runs at 700MHz at a temperature of ~51C. At full load the system got to 96C!!! I believe there is a T22 fan that we should both aspire to.

That said if your T21 will not run constantly under full load maybe you shouldn't worry - like me.

thanks for the info...I'll probably install it and check my temps...I rarely run at full speed, but will also keep my eyes open for a T22 fan on ebay...thanks

I wonder if a T23 fan/heatsink would work in the T21? (or is it same as a T22)

There is a beefier fan for the later T22 models I believe, have a look at this thread:

I haven't been able to find a source for the 26P9317 anywhere though.

I installed one of these 04P3448 / FRU 04P3295 fans in my T20 that I upgraded with a PIII 850. These fans were used in some of the T21s that shipped with PIII 800 and maybe the PIII 850 CPUs. There's a Z bracket required to properly hold this style of fan in place. My fan came with this bracket. I haven't seen these for sale anywhere.

I have my T20 set up to dual boot Win98SE and WinXP. The system runs cooler in XP than it does in 98 but I did get it up to 80°C the other day with a heavy load. I use MobileMeter in XP to track the temperature

http://ring.riken.jp/archives/pc/forest/m/mobilemeter/

Win98SE runs a little warmer than it did with the old 650 CPU. I'd like to find a similar program as MobileMeter for monitoring temperature with 98. I tried Motherboard Monitor but it doesn't work with my TP. I have Rain and Waterfall I'm going to try out to lower the temperature a little.

DOS was running HOT because the CPU was running at maximum speed. I use Ghost in DOS and I've tried DOSIDLE to cool the CPU a little. Changing the Power setting in the the BIOS to AUTO-LOW worked better at reducing the temp.

Based on my experience with the PIII 850, I'd recommend the newer 26P9317 fan for a 900 or 1000MHz CPU.

Here's some prices I've seen on the web for 26P9317 fans.

IMPACT Computers & Electronics $39.95.
Spare Parts Warehouse $45.00
itparade.com $11.00
Memroy for less $40.35
Index worldwide $45.00
Index worldwide $45.00

Again Chas, thanks for the heads-up on sourcing the 26P9317! I have to say it doesn't look that much more substantial than the current heatsink/fan I have but I shall order one none the less - nothing to lose!!

With my SXGA LCD from Ebay on the way I am looking forward to a COOLER 1GHz, SXGA T21 ....!

Installed the T22 fan/heatsink and the SL53S 1.0ghz CPU today into the T21.
The T22 fan has a slight difference over the T21..

I used silver thermal paste (just to be safe)

Running at full bore (995mhz) (light load)idle temp was around 48-55c...with a load (running a few apps at once) temp rose steadily to about 83c, fan kicked in beforehand and temp idled back down to 75, not too bad at full load.

Using adaptive settings for both AC and battery now it seems to stay anywhere from 49c to 70c (fan kicks in and runs well)
Guess I'm safe...case does not get overly hot.

I did use the T21 fan, but at full load it would hover around 90+.
I would suggest the T22 fan for those using a T21 w/ a 1.0ghz cpu.

Temps are pretty much on par with a stock T22 unit I think.

When you say adaptive settings, what, where, how, what OS?

I got about the same temperature results as you with a PIII M 850 and a T21 04P3295/04P3448 fan in XP.

This weekend I bought a 08P9317 T22 fan on eBay for $4.95. I'm hoping that it may be the same as the 26P9317.

Received and installed a 26P9317 T22 fan today. Seems to work well.

T20 PIII 650 with original fan - 30°C at Idle - 70°C Full Load

T20 PIII 850 with 04P3295 T21 fan - 38°C at Idle - 73°C Full Load

T20 PIII 850 with 26P9317 T22 fan - 36°C at Idle - 74°C Full Load

I used Radio Shack white silicone thermal paste on the T21 fan and Artic Silver 5 thermal paste on the T22 fan. The T22 fan kicked on at 73°C and breifly peaked at 74°C then quickly cooled down to 69°C at full load. The fan shut off at 47°C. It runs very quiet.

FYI Followup:

The T2x fans have a heat tube that transfers heat from the top of the CPU to the fan chamber. The heat tube in the original T20 fan/heatsink is about 10mm x 60mm. It's about 14mm x 60mm in the T21 and T22 fans.

The heat tube sits on top of the fan/heatsink on the T20 & T21 models and transfers a portion of the heat to the upper left hand area of the keyboard. I always found it somewhat annoying.

The tube is embeddded in the T22 26P9317 fan and transfers a lot less heat to the keyboard so it remains cool.
