p means performance model, which is slightly expensive. It usually includes a fast 60GB HDD which runs at 7200 RPM (although very few modified non-p models include the same). Now, fast 100GB models are also available (not with original T42p).

* p includes a powerful ATI 128 MB graphics card, whereas non-p has only 32 or 64MB.

* WLAN may be intel in some models of T42 rather than IBM (atheros chipset card).

* You'll may find a diff in DVD-multiburner. non-p may have only a CD-rw.

Not all the models are same. You may find eact spec. in tabook.pdf from IBM. in the link below:

You also get 1024 mb ram standard on the p models (all of them I think)

Some maybe, but not all "p" models. My GVU had 512MB standard.
ThinkPad T42p :: 2373-GVU :: P M 745 / 512MB RAM / 60GB 7200 HD / 14.1" SXGA+ / FireGL T2 128MB VRAM / Bluetooth / Atheros 11a/b/g / 9-cell battery.

Looking at this link, the only difference I see is that the 'P' subseries is considered a 'Mobil Workstation', where the others are not.

This link shows what a 'Mobil Workstation' is.

From what I see, the main feature of the 'Mobil Workstation' models is enhanced graphics capabilities for graphics-intensive applications.

Main benefit of T42p, T43p

ATI FireGL means that the ATI chipset has been unlocked to provide workstation performance on 3-D rendering that is typically used by CAD packages. It's a little-known fact that most 3-D graphics cards are actually "gamer" cards and don't work too well for actual AutoCAD applications. I'm not exactly sure what's unlocked with the FireGL card, but the unlocked cards (NVidea Quattro, too) typically sell for 4x more money than a regular 3-D gamer card.

On the other hand, I have read a review that said the chipset in the 9600 of the T42 is actually a little faster than with the FireGL chipset, and so games are actually slightly worse (on some benchmarks 10% slower) on the T42p than on the T42, supposedly.

The "p" has also a wonderful UXGA 1600x1200 > 15'
I've seen the same satellit pict with a UXGA vs SXGA+(1400x1050) 64 Mo Ati 9600 and it's a huge + with the "p" when you're zooming .

The p model's 7600 hd is quick enough for video capture with no dropped frames through the whole disk. hds are slower on the inner tracks, a slower disk may/may not work esp if the it's writing near physical end of disk.
