where is the system serial number stored on my t41 laptop?

#1 Post by thinkpadz » Fri Jul 15, 2005 2:11 am

I have a t41 and am considering upgrading the systemboard.
Can anyone tell me if the system serial # is stored on an eprom on the board?
that number is the only thing tied to my warranty right?
I guess swapping the sys board is gonna void the warranty anyway so maybe this is a mute point anyway..

thanks in advance.

You can find it in the BIOS :)
Surfing on a T42 (2378RAU) - Dothan 1.6Ghz. 1024mb of Ram. 32mb ATI 7500. Intel 2200BG wifi card 100GB Seagate HDD

Also surfing on an X41 Tablet! - 1.5GHZ, 1GB of RAM, 60GB HDD, Bluetooth CDC, etc etc

According to the IBM Hardware Maintenance Manual, if you replace the system board, you need to update the serial number. To do this, you need the Hardware Maintenance diskette and a floppy drive. The current Hardware Maintenance diskette is hard to come by, but you may be able to find an older version by doing some searches (but if the older version will work, I cannot say). Apparantly IBM/Lenovo will only sell the Maintenance diskette to certain parties. I've read that you need to have the serial numbers in the BIOS to use the 'ThinkVantage Software Installer'.

Quick question..after I wap this board out and when I sell this older sys board, is there anywhere else on the board that has my system serial number?
I dont want my warranty getting switched over to someone else or something.
