Convince me to wait for the X41 tablet instead of the X41...
Ok... currently using a Thinkpad T42.
Love the big screen but I travel and can't stand the heft.
Looking for an ultra portable machine.
The logical choice (since my company is an IBM shop) was the X41 tablet. But I'm traveling for almost 2 weeks starting next week and really wanted the new machine in time for my trips.
The X41 is available now and the Tablet has about a 2 week wait (or more).
I've never used the Tablet edition of XP.
For those currently using a tablet, can you convince me that I really need to wait for the Tablet or will I be fine with the X41?
I'm an exec at a software company. Lots of Office documents. I like OneNote but never used the drawing features.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks.

No need to convince you. You won't get your hand on the X41T within 2 weeks time frame.
Coming from the T42, using the X41 will be a let down for you. You should give the X32 some thoughts.

T43 2668-75U: 2GHz, 14.1" SXGA, 2GB RAM, 64MB ATI x300, DVD Recordable, IBM 11a/b/g Wi-Fi Wireless II, Bluetooth, Fingerprint Reader.
Interesting. Hadn't thought of that. Is the size of the screen the only major difference between the X32 and T42?Wholesomer wrote:No need to convince you. You won't get your hand on the X41T within 2 weeks time frame.

even though i dont have any of the thinkpads were talking about, from what ive read, the only differences between t42 and x32 are:
screen
not as powerful gpu (but better than the x41)
no optical bay
better/longer battery life.
edit: while i really like the idea of having a 7 hour battery from the x32, id occasionally like to take this to a friends place and lan with him. so im leaning towards the t43/43p

Well, those aren't the only differences: X series TP's are about 2 lbs lighter, and do not have a touchpad. In the X series, an onboard fingerprint reader is only available on an X41. And X3x has a CF card slot, X4x has a SD card slot.eigh wrote:even though i dont have any of the thinkpads were talking about, from what ive read, the only differences between t42 and x32 are: ...
Also, with the standard battery the runtime is not significantly different between the X32 and the T42. And you won't get 7 hours from an X32 without buying an extended battery.
Another subtle difference is that the X32 has both user-replaceable memory banks accessible from the bottom of the unit, while the T42 has only one bank accessible from the bottom (the keyboard has to be removed to access the base memory module).

I am exactly where you are. I have a T42. I carry it from home to work, mainly Office spreadsheets and internet. I love the T42 because i use it as a portable but it is also my desktop.
The reasons why I decided to go with the x41 tablet are:
1. my T42, while great, is too heavy.
2. my only other essential in my briefcase is my paper notepad and i'm hoping the tablet will replace that.
3. i currently use OneNote and can already feel that using the handwriting tablet feature will be a big positive.
4. i want a smaller notebook. i have a screen i hook up to at home and in my office, so i don't need to carry a 15inch notebook around everywhere, and i carry my notebook Everywhere.
Yes the tablet has a slower CPU than a T42, but i think upgrading the RAM to 1.5gb will make a substantial difference. I've used my T42 over a year with the stock 512mb RAM and i have had no complaints (although its alittle slow when i work on Photoshop, but still the 1.5Gb upgrade of the Tablet will remedy that).
So for me, my main concern is weight and size. I already have a T42, why should i go to a x32 whe the x41 tablet is smaller and lighter. And I also want to replace my paper notebook. so why not go for the x41 tablet instead of the x41. i've gone over a year with the t42, i can wait a few more weeks. Plus if you're like me, i know i'll regret not giving the tablet a try the moment i receive the regular x41. so, i'm going to wait. you can go for the x41 and have it shipped early. just don't hate me when i say i told you so when i'm all giddy with my x41 tablet

Too funny. I had IT place the order for the X32. It'll be here tomorrow. I have 30 days with it. I'm looking forward to your feedback on the X41 Tablet when you get it.usccharles wrote: So for me, my main concern is weight and size. My T42 actually has 2gb of RAM and I find it sluggish at times so I was definitely a bit tentative about moving to the X41 since the hardware specs are not quite up to snuff with the T42 or X32.
When do you expect to get your X41 Tablet? I'm hoping it's within 30 days from when I get the X32.

yeah, i know. i'm getting both the 4 cell and the 8 cell and i think i can manage with the 4 cell most of the time since i'm plugged in when i'm sitting at my office both home and office. 8 cell will be when i'm away for a longer period but from the reviews i've read, the 8 cell seems to be designed in a way so that its quite comfy to hold on to.azX32 wrote:- lighter by 0.1 pound on 4-cell battery models, but actually heavier by 0.4 pound on 8-cell modelsusccharles wrote:I already have a T42, why should i go to a x32 whe the x41 tablet is smaller and lighter.

as for the ETA... i wish it comes before your x31 30 day trial, but dont count on it
