Seagate Momentus 100GB, 7200RPM HD

#1 Post by kthch » Mon Jul 18, 2005 11:38 pm

I would like to change to this HD in a X31. Does anybody have experiences with this 100GB HD in a X31?
IBM support told to me: It will not work!
So because there is not return policy here in Switzerland as it is in the US,
I have to know it before I buy.

Kind regards

Thomy

Of course it will work, as will any 2.5" ATA drive currently available. But at least here in the US, there don't seem to be any 2.5" 100GB 7200rpm drives in stock anywhere.

Is this one of the drives that will give you a BIOS Warning every time you boot?

There are plenty of people already using 2.5" 100GB 5400rpm drives in Thinkpads. There's no reason why the 7200rpm version would not work, if you can find one.

He's referring to the T43 BIOS warning with non-IBM hard drives.

It is one of those drives, but the X32 doesn't have the warning. The T43 has the warning because it's got a crappy PATA controller that hangs off of the SATA bus that isn't 100% compatible with aftermarket hard drive firmware, and the warning is there so that the aftermarket drives don't get screwed up. The X32's PATA controller is built in to the chipset, and has none of these problems, so no need for the warning.

Go for it, I'd say.

I called IBM about putting a faster hard drive in the new X tablet, and they said that the tablet uses a smaller type of hard drive (not a regular notebook 2.5" hdd). But putting it in a normal X series laptop should be OK, just watch out, some hard drives will make a lot more heat, and may void your warranty.

Actually, ANY X4 series laptop uses a proprietary (read: not the same as what Hitachi and Toshiba are selling to end users and Apple) 1.8" hard drive - whether it's a tablet or not.

However, all X2s and X3s use ordinary 2.5" hard drives.

For now, it's a "paper" release.

You mean the X4 series uses 1.8" HDDs with ZIF instead of the normal IDE connector?

I haven't opened up my X40 (with 40GB) or X41T (with 60GB), but I thought the Hitachi Travelstar C4K60 is only available in up to 30GB capacity with ZIF connector?

Anyways, for 2.5" HDDs (to be used in USB enclosure) I'm looking for either the 7200rpm 100GB from Hitachi/IBM Travelstar or Seagate Momentus...

...or the 160GB 5400rpm from Seagate Momentus. I'm leaning towards this 5400rpm drive because my concern is that the 7200rpm drives will require too much power that some computers might not be able to supply enough USB bus power?

Any ideas when either one of the above drives (especially the 160GB) will be out?

P.S. I've yet to check out the Toshiba, I wonder if they also have big 120GB+ capacity or fast 7200rpm models...

As I understand it, it's a proprietary drive. As in, it's not anything that Hitachi lists on their site, and it's a custom job that they did for IBM for the X4.

Nothing "custom" about them. Available in both ZIF and IDE versions.

New "slim" higher capacity drives coming!

^ I too saw those upcoming "slim" 1.8" Travelstar HDDs, I wonder when they'll be available?

80GB max (2 platters) for the new slim drive vs. 60GB max (2 platters) for the current C4K60.

The new slim drives will be 5mm (1 platter) and 8mm (2 platters) high, vs. 7mm (1 platter) and 9.5mm (2 platters) high for the current drives. Plus the new slim drives are supposed to have 10-20% lower power consumption.

Thing is, the new slim drives are only supposed to come out with ZIF connector (no IDE connector version), so I would need a 1.8" USB enclosure that supports ZIF!

The 1.8" USB enclosure I'm using now with my C4K60 60GB drive uses the IDE connector.

So to recap the max drive sizes as far as I've been able to find:

1" formfactor: around 5-8GB max? (3600rpm?)

1.8" formfactor: 60GB max, soon 80GB (4200rpm only)
smallest USB enclosure: 3.2" x 2.8" x 0.4" @ 1.9oz

2.5" formfactor: 120GB max, soon 160GB (for 5400rpm model)
smallest USB enclosure: 4.5" x 2.6" x 0.4" @ 2.2oz (only for 9.5mm drives)

3.5" formfactor: 400GB max, soon 500GB (for 7200rpm model)
smallest USB enclosure: ?

The Deskstar 7K500 is out, so it's 500GB NOW.

As for 1" drives, the Hitachi Microdrive (4 to 6GB) is 3600RPM.
The Cornice Storage Element (3-4GB) is 4440RPM.
Toshiba's 0.85" drive (2-4GB) is 3600RPM.

Thanks bhtooefr. And I saw Seagate's 1" CF drives (3600rpm) listed at up to 8GB, which are supposed to come Fall 2005.

I also posted on SR:

Also, there's a 5GB version that they're not selling direct to OEMs...

http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.a ... Hard+Drive

It's in a USB drive. That's the only approx 1" USB drive enclosure that I know of that's specifically intended for a 1" drive that I know of, FWIW.

As for enclosures for other 1" HDDs, you would want a Type II CF reader. The smallest are probably PCMCIA. Of course, on my X21, there's zero space cost to use a 1" CF HDD :P

Hehe yeah, I'd seen that round Seagate 5GB USB pocket HDD at CompUSA and other places. Just to make it clear for others, that's a prepackaged product (I don't think you can just open the enclosure and take out the drive modularly).

Unfortunately, even if it uses a small 0.85" 5GB HDD, that thing is already 3" (diameter) x 0.7" @ 2.2oz.

Whereas my 1.8" 60GB HDD in a modular USB enclosure is 3.2" x 2.8" x 0.4" @ 4oz and provides 12 times the capacity!

Granted the Seagate 1" (0.85") 5GB USB pocket HDD does have some advantages:
- lighter weight
- built-in retractable USB cable (I'm using a separate retractable ZipLinq/Boxwave USB cable)
- probably more cushioning for better protection

There ARE prepackaged 1.8" USB HDDs like the:
- Targus 40GB (3.4" x 3" x 0.6" @ 3.2oz)
- Apricorn 60GB (3.9" x 2.8" x 0.6" @ 5oz)
which also come with a short built-in USB cable, but they're usually bigger, heavier and much more expensive than the modular enclosure solution I'm using.

Besides, with the modular solution I thought I could always take out the HDD in the future and stick it in my X-series notebooks (that is, until you mentioned that the X-series uses custom 1.8" drives with proprietary connector??).

As far as CF Microdrive HDDs, I've been able to stay away from them and just get by with my three 2GB 60x SD cards (along with my three 1GB and a few smaller capacity SD cards) :)
