Fn + Spacebar moves my desktop icons

#1 Post by gte204i » Thu Jun 24, 2004 10:21 am

I have a 14.1" 1400x1050 screen. Whenever I use Fn + Spacebar to zoom in on a window, it moves the icons that are on the right side of my desktop to slightly right-of-center on the desktop (once the zooming is turned off). I understand that if they didn't do that, then I wouldn't be able to see them in the "zoom" mode, but it's still annoying. I want them moved back when I exit the "zoom" mode. I like to put the icons in functional groups around the edges of the screen. What gives? Is there any way to prevent this, other than not using the zoom?

Not that I know of, it's a Windows thing. It's basically changing the screensize.

Or, on the trackpad, intead of the middle button being scroll, you can change it to the magnifying glass, and just adjust the size to 800x600 and use that, though you'll loose the scrolling.

Try to play with the "Arrange Icons By" menu on Desktop>Right click. I don't have any problem with the magnifier. My settings are (checked): Name, Auto Arrange, Align to Grid, Show Desktop Icons.

Hope it helps.

You might try a utility called "Restore Desktop".
You can find it here http://www.softwarium.com/rdwin.html
It gives you an option under the desktop context (right-click) menu to save and restore desktop icons positions.
It also restores icons to saved positions when you change screen resolution.
Does a great job and most importantly it's freeware.

Thanks for the link to the freeware. It sounds like what I need. I didn't think about this before, but auto-arrange will not work for me because it simply arranges the icons by whatever you specify - I want my icons distributed around the screen.
