is fan always on in T42?

#1 Post by samba » Thu Jun 24, 2004 11:10 am

i have a new 2379DXU. fan is always on. It is not bothering me but just want to know if this is normal. My old dell inspiron 8000 turned on fan periodically or when load is high.

Rather largely depends on what you're doing with it I suppose - any cpu intensive routines running? If you're surfing the web, or word processing I imagine you'd be doing that in total silence (no fan) but even fairly short bursts of auto-cad etc. would tend to get it spinning. I'm awaiting the arrival of my 2373CWU so until that time I can't really comment...

i think it is always on.. like how desktop fans are always on. the heat just needs to be spit out of the machine.

when the system heat goes up (cpu/gpu/hd) the fans go into higher rpm, which is louder than the idle speed

Any more replies to this? I received my T42P recently and it's much louder than I thought it would be. I'm comparing this to the Toshiba I have, which runs almost silent until the CPU gets used.

The fan in mine is almost totally silent. Even when it's actually running at higher speed, it's barely audible. It only does this when I am doing something compute-intensive.

The other 90% of the time, I cannot even tell if it is running, because I cannot actually hear anything. I used to think it was off, but lately I have begun to suspect it might still be on at some really low level, because I can still feel air coming out of the vent. It's by far the quietest laptop I have ever seen.

Mofongo, what power settings are you using? I know for sure if I happen to set it on full speed it starts getting loud. This is in a silent room of course. However, it stays relatively quiet if I leave it on adaptive. Using mobilemonitor I see dramatic increases in temperature if I leave it running at full speed. From 41C to around 55C. If the CPU is being used it'll spike to 63C. However, even at full speed the Thinkpad is quiet in a room with air conditioning.

I just received a 2379-DXU. My fan seems to be on all the time, too. This is in contrast to a 2378-FVU that I returned where the fan would sometimes be off. I guess it must be normal. FWIW, the fan is very quiet.

Same boat here. 2379-DXU, the fan runs full time (low speed, not the high speed that you hear for a brief momenet on startup). I noticed another thread where a guy with a T40 has a fan that runs all the time when using his 802.11.

I almost never hear my fan.

Of course, that could be why my machine keeps overheating... :x

My T42p fan is always on.. it is almost all the time low speed, and just a very brief moment at hi speed when starting up

it blows almost cold air......not even really warm....

maybe I should try to monitor the out of fan air temp! ?! hehe

Hey guys,

Mine also blows air all the time. Very quiet though. I'll be honest, I was hoping the fan would only come on when necessary... but overall this is one great laptop. I have a t42 btw, not a p.

My one concern. Even when I have power management set to high performance, I go into the system control panel and it shows the CPU running at 598 mhz... when plugged in and on max performance isn't the cpu supposed to run at full speed? (1.5 mghz for me)

Am I just not looking in the right place? Please let me know.

Have a goodnight all,
Jon

I had the same problem, which is explicitly addressed in the newest embedded controller firmware. Also updated BIOS. Try...

My T41 fan is always on :( ,
with the new embedded controller firmware you have now a cyclic fan noise of 30 secondes (with the old embedded controller it's 5 secondes  )
One issue see my post: http://forum.tt-hardware.com/ultimatebb ... 12978&p=11
and the culprit on video :P (on the down of page)

My fan seems a lot quieter with the current embedded controller (3.03) and the new BIOS. Which version of the embedded controller do you recommend? This website says the fan problem is fixed by the current version (3.03)...

Maybe in the future they will give us control over the fan in the BIOS or IBM Access. We should ask them to allow us to set fan cycle times, speeds, etc. Or maybe a hacked BIOS or embedded controller would work.

spirifer, That's funny! :D Now if that's quieter than your Thinkpad by itself, you definitely have a problem!

On another note, it looks like your laptop is dusty. Could dust have caked the fan and fins and made it louder/less efficient?

edit - I just checked out the videos. You're bold!

-darren

edit - changed quieter to louder
