Can't cancel order?

#1 Post by rockyp » Thu Jul 21, 2005 2:34 pm

I'm a newbie and apologize if this is the wrong forum for my question. I ordered a 2668G5U on monday, July 18 for my daughter for when she starts school in August. After learning that the unit was backordered (09/07/05), I called the IBM rep to cancel it. He said he would do so. When it didn't show as cancelled on the web site the next day, I followed up with an email and left voice mail for the rep to give me a call. No response. On wednesday I sent another email. Still no response. This morning I finally got hold of the rep, who apologized for being busy, and said he would cancel right away. Just now I got an email from him saying that he can't cancel the order because it's been shipped. It still shows a shipping date of 09/07/05 on the web site but instead of backordered the status now shows packing. In the meantime, I've ordered something else. I tried calling him again but all I get is voice mail, which he doesn't return. Am I now stuck with this order? Your advice is much appreciated.

it IS possible it has shipped as the ship dates are not reliable. If you receive it, return it for a refund.

your problem is "backordered"
But you said it's been shipped. So probably you will receive it within few days. Can't see any problem here. 8)

You can still return it for a refund because of the 30 day window. But you will have to cough up the shipping costs. When I sent mine it was $75.00 with insurance, and ground.....

What I recommend you do is if you don't want the TP call support and create a case # for something wrong with the unit and when you return it they will give you an RMA and UPS will pick it up and shipping is now ...*FREE*.....

Hope that helps....

Thank you for your replies. The web site showed "backordered" when I cancelled it on monday. It only changed from "backordered" to "packing" today (four days after cancelling). I've bought something else in the meantime. The IBM rep claims it's been "shipped," not the web site. Returning it for a refund is what'll I have to do then and pay the $100 return shipping.

OK, that would help, but isn't that only for exchanges and not refunds?

Thank you all for your suggestions, but the 2668G5U still shows a shipping date of 09/06/05. We really need something earlier. I should've ordered the T42p 2373GVU for an OSU price of $1741.74 with a 10-days lead time, but I realize now that those lead times on the web site are meaningless.

if you are gonna return the laptop, why don't you just refuse to receive when the carrier come? I think it is the best way so you don't have to spend any extra cost.

Can you do that? Don't you have to have a reason, such as damaged in shipment?

The web site now shows that it's been shipped and invoiced, but the est. shipping date still is 09/07/05. Does it come on a slow boat from China?
I suppose that will change when it's actually shipped.

By the way, when I receive it, can I take it for a test run, and then return it for a full refund (minus shipping, of course)?

Well, you could, but if you know you're not going to keep it, that would be kind of tacky.

my t43p only spent 3 days shipping via UPS.
If you wanna test it, you will need to pay for the shipping fee. (ship to IBM)

You shouldn't have to pay return shipping, especially if you have documentation that clearly shows you tried to cancel the order several times before it shipped. Call your rep again, and ask him to credit the return shipping because he didn't cancel the order for you in a timely fassion. If you get any static, escalate to a supervisor. I would think that should take care of it.

Well, it's crunch time. The shipping date went from 09/07/05 to it being en route (it's in Inchon, Korea right now), so I should get it next week. I also ordered an Asus W3V and must make a decision which one I'm going to send back (most likely the Asus). I will just have to eat the shipping charges. Actually I now have my heart set on the T42p 2373GVU. It's basically the same configuration, but after reading some of the comments here (Snowdog?), there's less fan activity and runs a little cooler. I'm even thinking of ordering the 2373GVU as well and actually comparing the two.

It sounds like I'm buying this for myself (hah, I wish!), but it's really for my daughter when she returns to school.

Yes, I agree, but since the item has now actually shipped, I don't feel so bad. What annoyed me is that the item was still showing as "backordered" with an est. shipping date of "09/07/05" four days after I cancelled it. The fact that the rep didn't cancel when I asked him to only aggravated the matter. The lesson I learned is that in future I will ask for an immediate email confirmation of any such request.

Another thing I'm curious about. This was a legit academic purchase for my daughter, but I was never asked for any documentation to that effect. Can anybody buy at that price, and is the web price just another way of saying "manufacturer's suggested retail"?

Through my work I've seen the T43 (2668-73U), the T42P (2373-GVU), and more recently the T43P (2668-G6U). And based on my observations (FWIW) the T42P is more than enough for a college laptop. It's quieter and performs just as well as a T43P. There is noticeable difference between the T43 and T42P AND T43P basically the P's are faster. Perhaps due to the faster drive and more vram....thuse the performance label. The T43, in my opinion, is louder than the P's maybe it's just the way that "one" was built. I don't know. And it had this annoying "whhr", "whhr" sounds. The T43P has a constance fan sound.

Now, I have complained about the noise. But the noise level of the T43P is acceptable for me. Like I said it's not as loud as the previous T43 that I had returned.

Conclusion- T42P and T43P are just about the same for business applications work. I'm not a gamer so I don't have any input on that. I have an Oracle Database (9i) and Oracle Internet Developer Suite running on both the T42P and T43P. To my surprise it runs very well!! I do have 2GB of RAM because Oracle is a resource hog. If the T42P GVU can run an Oracle Database then it should be more than plenty for a college student. So I'd go with the T42P. Plus she will probably spend some time in the library and the noise level of the T42P will come in handy. I'm stuck in a data center with about 150 dell blade servers and it feels like I'm in the middle of the runway @ LAX. Aahh the power of grid computing.... :P

I hope this helps!

Good Luck!

PS: the T43P was @ $2,599.00 with a free 6 cell
the T42P was @ 2,199.00 with a free 6 cell. All from IBlame, I mean IBM.

if you really do not want that T43p then just refuse it..
and if UPS leaves it without a signature they will come back and pick it up..

not fair to open and play with it knowing it will be returned..

BUT, having said all that, you might just keep it once you actually use it.. :)
