Hard Drive Cloning (all partitions)

#1 Post by syhead » Fri Jul 22, 2005 4:17 pm

Alright, I did a search on the forum and I conuld not find an answer.
Is this question too stupid to deserve an answer or is it too difficult to answer?

What I want:
1) plug in my external 120Gb back-up HD (USB)
2) copy into it an image of my T42 HD, including the hidden backup partition
3) Pop in my new, larger HD, and copy the old hard drive image into it.

All the old post did not say with clarity is it was possbile to do this without missing the backup partition.

Can I do that with the R&R software? Does that mean that I would have to first intall into the new HD all the software using the recovery CDs? The, after that all I have to do is load the old HD image? Will it be exactly like the new HD?

thanks in advance for the help!!!

Basically, that's how I see it.

Use the Recovery Disks on the new hard drive first. Then clone the desired Windows partition only, to the new drive. I'm not sure it would be necessary, but after using the Recovery Disks you could reformat the Windows partition on the new drive, before you clone from the old drive.

Alternatively, you can first create a backup using the Rapid Restore Ultra program that comes with the factory preload. You use the Recovery Disks on the new drive, then restore the backup onto the new drive using the Rapid Restore Ultra program; booting into the Rescue and Recovery workspace by pressing the blue Access IBM button at the start of the boot up sequence, or by booting up using the Rescue Media (not the Recovery Disks mentioned above).

A final alternative is to restore a backup that was created using the Rapid Restore Ultra program. You would boot up with your Rescue Media (not the Recovery Discs), then from there you would restore your backup. You need to be sure that the Rescue Media was created with the same version of Rapid Restore Ultra that the backup was created with. As far as I can tell, this method does not restore the hidden partition.

I already ordered a Hitachi 80Gb, 5400RPM. I guess I'll try the second option you described first. Hopefully, I'll end up with a perfect image of my present computer software and files, but with 40Gb of extra space!

Either the first or second option would creat the hidden partition.

Another thing just occurred to me: I'm using a boot password for the computer AND the HDD. Do I have to disable that before removing the HDD?

A power-on password should cause no problem. Regarding a hard disk user password, a hard disk master password, and/or supervisor's password, I really can't say. If it was me, I would remove them before I started, and replace them when I finish.

Who cares about the rescue partition. You've got a cloned drive, man! Just don't sell it on ebay!
