Speedstep and the 600x 2645 3EU
Speedstep and the 600x 2645 3EU
I just got the 650 Mhz CPU upgrade for my 600x 2645 3eu and just can't figure out how to get it up to 650. I have Speedstep installed and can't get it over 500. Also, the whole system freezes when the battery is installed. Take out the battery... no problem. I've been looking through the posts for the last few days and have found some good ideas but none have seemed to work. Is this a limitation of the system? Can someone give me some pointers.
OS Winxp SP2
Ram 320
HD 80 G WD
Thanks

The 3EU does not have SpeedStep on the system board. Only the 650MHz boards have it. So, your 650 will always run at 500.
And something is very broken if the battery disables the machine. Have you tried another battery? IBM^H^H^HLenovo is still making them and selling for $59.

So I've basicsally wasted money buying this CPU upgrade. 450 mhz to 500 mhz is a compete waste of money and my time. The battery is an IBM battery... Not third party. It seems the battery stops the system when the speedstep software is running. Now that I know there is no speedstep for this laptop, I'll just uninstall the software and run it without. Anyone interested in a 650 MHz processor upgrade for the 600x. Used once for about an hour...whizkid wrote:The 3EU does not have SpeedStep on the system board. Only the 650MHz boards have it. I agree, I wouldn't have bothered with an upgrade of 50 MHz, but now that it's in there you may as well leave it until you get a buyer. I'm assuming you bought the 650 board used, so using it a bit more won't hurt a thing as long as it is in good working order. Of course if you've already pulled it...
Now you know why there is a substantial price differential between 500 MHz and under 600X models and faster ones. I've been looking for a bargain priced 600X. Found a great deal on another 600E, but it comes up with an error that the seller (on e-bay) failed to mention. I think it's just a CMOS battery failure, but could be the track-point. Haven't tried with a mouse plugged, fully charged battery (low main battery shouldn't give an error code on booting though), or just on AC power and no battery yet (a bad battery *might* give an error code). I plan on keeping the thing and fixing it, but seller will get negative feedback for not mentioning the error if it's more than a battery or not using an external mouse.

Well I pulled the 650 Mhz CPU out and went back to the 450. Everything is working right again. I feel kinda stupid that I didn't check out with this forum about doing this upgrade before actually doing it. Seems there's a lot of people with the correct information here. I guess I'll know the next time. Thanks for the help guys.
