very loud DVD drive

#1 Post by ryan » Sat Jul 23, 2005 3:43 pm

Hi. My DVD/CD-RW drive is extremely loud when it is accessed. In bios I set its speed to "Silent," however that only made it a little more quiet. I've had this problem for awhile, and I think it may be related to when I opened the computer up to replace the wireless card.

Is there anything else I can do? What could the problem be?

edit: Just realized that this is probably in the wrong place.

Do you hear any clicking sound, by any chance? Is it vibrating a lot? If so, the dvd drive might be "misaligned".

Btw, was it always that loud?

I don't hear any sort of clicking sound, and it doesn't vibrate very much.

It hasn't always been this loud.

But, when I pull it out, I am able to "rock" the part the comes out forward and backward a few inches. Is this normal?

Does it happen with all DVDs/CDs ? Try another one.

If the behavior will be the same send DVD-rom back to IBM.
Let's go'n'restart :-)

Yup, happens with every CD/DVD. Sending it to IBM is out of the question though because I'm out of warranty.

No, if it is a bearing then you would need to replace whole drive.
