T420 - Quad Core CPU and BIOS upgrade (or downgrade)

#1 Post by ojciec » Fri Dec 15, 2023 4:49 pm

Hello all :)

I still have my old trusty T420 that i love and i don't plan to get rid of it even if for everyday use i have P53.

At the moment i have 1.52 official BIOS installed. I replaced my old CPU with i7-2860QM but it looks like BIOS is allowing me to either have 4 cores or multithreading, not both at the same time (probably due to TPD limitation).

I am not afraid of thermals and i am aware that 45TPD CPU and NVS 4200M is too much for heatsink and fan in T420 but please ignore that here - i am fully aware of issues with overheating. :)

What can i do to make it run at 4 cores 8 threads? Can i safely downgrade BIOS version to some older, modified version that will allow me to use CPU? Coreboot is unfortunately not an option in my case since it's not supporting Optimus as far as i know.
Now:
Lenovo T420: I7 2,7GHz 2620m, 8GB ram, 240GB SSD, 14,1", Nvidia Quadro NVS M4200
History:
Lenovo ThinkPad T410
Lenovo ThinkPad T400
IBM ThinkPad X60 Tablet
IBM ThinkPad T61
IBM ThinkPad T22

AFAIK you are also gonna need a beefier charger to do that. 90W may be really pushing it especially if your main battery is dead and 65W is definitely a hard no.
That, or that your motherboard is simply not capable of the power delivery required to make that heaty CPU go full speed with all core max turbo.

Since always i am using only 90w chargers with my T420 but it still refuses to work with 4 cores 8 threads - either 4 cores 4 threads or 2 cores 4 threads.

I wonder if it's due to the particular quad-core processor you used. Most quad-core mods I've seen use i7-27xxQM CPUs, while yours has the 2860QM.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons
