Installing Windows T23 PROBLEM

#1 Post by 390E77 » Tue Jul 26, 2005 2:56 pm

Hi.

This is my problem. I have a T23 with a formatted HDD, but there is no OS installed. I want to install windows 98, so i insert my floppy and load it with cdrom support to install it. but to use my cdrom i need to take the floppy drive out and slid the cdrom into the slim bay. And when i do so it does not recognize it! What can i do??

anyone know how to install any OS on a T23???

Thanks for any help!

On a T23?

Just put in the CD drive, put in the Windows 98 CD, and boot up.

You may have to go into CMOS Setup (F1 when you first turn it on, if it's anything like my X21), and set the CD drive to be higher in the boot order than the hard drive.

Go into the BIOS and set the CD drive as your first BOOT device, then use a bootable CD to install your OS.

If your copy of win98 is non bootable, the other option is to get an external USB floppy drive.

You need to boot from the floppy disk, and run sys c: from the A: prompt to transfer the system files to your HD to make it bootable. Then you will also have to copy over your config.sys file to the HD, copy the CD driver over (something like mscdex?), and edit the config.sys file to point to the new location for mscdex.

Then you should be able to boot from the HD and be able to see the CD drive and run setup from there.

Alternatively, and as an alternative to a usb floppy drive, you can format a usb key to be bootable (search this forum for threads) and boot from that, after setting bios appropriately.

Alternatively, you could make a bootable CD using Nero, and as part of the process, copy the Win98 CD contents to the bootable CD (you would first have to copy all the files to the computer doing the burning).

Many ways to skin this cat. USB floppy drive is probably easiest, USB boot key second easiest.

Against my better judgement (nobody should be using Windows 98 today), copy the cabs folder from the CD onto C:\Windows\Options\Cabs (make such a folder structure as you said the HD was formatted). Then go to the Cabs folder and run setup. All done. ... JD Hurst

Go with WinXP or 2000 if you can, you shouldn't have a problem running either of them........And you can get a copy pretty cheap....and then there is always linux ;)

Thanks for all that.

I of course tried to go on the bios and set my cdrom as primary boot that was obvious. but that didn't work, i think my cd isn't bootable.

my easiest option is make a bootable cd now. I wanted to install windows 98 first because that is the only way to install windows 200 pro. Can i also make a bootable 2000 cd?

thanks a lot for all this help

All W2K OS CDs are bootable, you don't need to have W98 installed first even if you're using a W2K upgrade CD! Boot from the upgrade CD, when the install program says it's looking for a qualifying OS to upgrade put your W98 CD in the machine and point the install program to it. It will read the W98 CD and "see" that you have a qualifying app. Put the W2K CD back in the machine and you'll be off and running.

Early W98 CDs (non-SE) are not bootable as you've found out the hard way.

Great tip James, that's a new one for me. Sure saves a lot of time.

It's a holdover from the days of W3.11 and WfW. You could just put the first Windows floppy in the machine when performing an upgrade to either of the newer OS.

Works with the CDs also.
