another 1802 problem, but with an authorized card
another 1802 problem, but with an authorized card
I just bought an IBM 11 a/b/g wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter II (73P4301) for my x31, model 2672. According to IBM's web site: http://tinyurl.com/8tueh
the card is compatible with the machine. When I boot, I get error message 1802 - remove network minipci card. This message usually means you're using an unauthorized card, but it's a genuine IBM (lenovo?) card. The machine is a CTO, by the way.
Easy Serve 1 says update bios - I do
Easy Serve 2 thinks I have a defective motherboard or a defective card. The machine has otherwise works fine. If there was a problem with the card, I'd think it wouldn't boot, rather than giving the error message. Nonetheless, they'll send a new card. I have my doubts, but you never know.
Any ideas?

Defective card, wrong card (as in, someone thought it was one card, but it was another), defective mobo, or dirty contacts.
Defective things work REALLY weirdly - you can't always predict their behavior. Not a computer, but one example of this weird behavior is a truck that we once had. Plug a Motorola i50sx into a charger in it's cigarette lighter, and the wipers would run. No other cell phone did that to it.
FWIW, when I had a Mini-PCI problem, it gave me a resource conflict between the network and modem (I have the 3com combo card).

Could be defective. Contacts look clean.
It's brand new with the right FRU number, so unlikely to be the wrong card.
EasyServe at first said the card wasn't compatible; when I pointed them to the web site, first level support asked second level support who reported the card was compatible.
I hope it's not a defective mobo, especially since the mobo otherwise seems fine. They're sending me a new card, so we'll see if that helps.
Glad to hear a defective card could generate 1802, so that's at least a possiblity.

That's my primary guess.
The web sales page seems the main source of the info that it is compatible. The normal support database says no (according to phone support) and tabook does not list the card under x31 2672, while listing it for x32 and x40 models.
Only when I point to the sales page and talk about returning the card does phone support insist that it is supported.
I wish there were a way to get a definitive answer.
At this point, I'll wait until another card shows up (with luck tomorrow), try it and then, probably, spend some more quality time with easyserve.

They didn't ship, due to some glitch at their end. Said they'd ship today. Call today, seems to be another glitch. They are now promising to ship version I of the card to arrive Monday,
There doesn't seem to be much of a difference between I and II, is there?
Even though they swear II is compatible with an X31, I seems more compatible

Interestingly, the little LED antenna light no longer works (it worked with the 2200bg), but the fn/F5 combo still brings up the same wifi stuff. I tried reinstalling Access Connections, hoping that would bring back the wifi light, but no such luck. Anyone know how I can get the LED back?richarddd wrote:Does the wifi light work? Holy crap. I just got the 1802 with the 73P4301 card for my X31 (2672-C2U) as well. Okay. Someone needs to have a serious exchange of ideas with the Lenovo techs regarding whether it works...or not. And I hope that this one involves a new BIOS version with an extra entry in the card whitelist. I don't mind pulling the no-1802 route, but that antenna light is helpful and should be supported.
I had many extended conversations with many EZ Serve techs. The conclusions were (1) the card works with an X31 2672 and (2) no it doesn't. In the end, they sent me the 1st generation a/b/g adaptor (31P9701), which works fine.
I sometimes wonder why the a/b/g II adaptor is $45 and the a/b/g I adaptor is $99.

I have been trying to locate no-1802.com on the Web, even through Google and Google Groups, and have had no luck. The one link given in several sources is no longer active. Does anyone have a current link or, perhaps, the file they would be willing to send to me? Thanks!
Yes, I ordered the 73P4301 ThinkPad 11a/b/g wireless LAN miniPCI adapter II and the X31 says it is unauthorized. The BIOS is current. Sigh. The things we have to do ...

Looks like http://jcnp.pku.edu.cn/~shadow/1802/ is down. Try this:
http://www.congenio.de/infos/no1802.com

A danger with no-1802.com is that IBM revises the cmos/controller/bios so that no-1802 no longer works.
You might try EZ Serve. If nothing else, it might encourage them to get the BIOS revised.
EDIT: clarify

EZ Serve is Thinkpad warranty repair. The failure of the card to work with an X31 seems to be a warranty problem.

Wait. no-1802.com will prevent you from getting into the BIOS and changing things? That's majorly bad news!richarddd wrote:A danger with no-1802.com is that they revise the cmos/controller/bios so that it no longer works.

Although the alternative (hacking the BIOS card whitelist) is even riskier. Did anyone have first-hand experience with this procedure?
