T43 What Brand Memory has 4-4-4-12 Timing/Clock? to run Dual

#1 Post by fjearr » Wed Jul 27, 2005 9:37 am

Hey Guys.

Im looking to upgrade my T43 2668 to either 1GB (another 512 piece) or perhaps another 1GB on top of my default memory.

My default 512MB pc2 4200 memory runs 4-4-4-12 latency/timing/clock and am just wondering if anyone knows what brands are available for sale that also sell 1GB or 512MB pieces with this Timing (4-4-4-12) and not older timing like 4-4-4-10 which I have noticed some samsungs have.

I just want to know so I can run the dual channel mode on my notebook as i've heard you have to have the exact same timing.

Would love to hear from anyone in the know, or memory experts out there.

Cheers

This is the fourth thread you've had on memory. Maybe next time you could use the search button and then consolidate all of your questions in one thread.

A little hint on memory - when talking about timings, lower numbers are better.

That said, the 4-4-4-10 should run at 4-4-4-12 when installed in your system.

re: Theory behind Memory Timing

#4 Post by fjearr » Wed Jul 27, 2005 9:48 pm

Hi.

Thanks for your post regarding the Timing, can you please elaborate on the Theory behind the memory Timing and why 4-4-4-10 or the lower number is better then the more modern 4-4-4-12 and if possible explain why it is that memtest will still recognise it as 4-4-4-12.

Any information would be extremely grateful.

I already sent this as a PM, but...

In this case, lower numbers are better. The higher the number, the more time it takes.

So, lower numbers are newer and higher end.

Why it's recognizing ALL of it at 4-4-4-12 is that all RAM in a system runs at the same speed as the slowest RAM.

Why bother with the search? It's mostly useless.

Personally, I have found the Search very helpful and think there should be a Sticky at the top of the page directing newcomers to the Search feature. Amazing how often in my short time on this Board I have seen a question asked when there is already a complete and very helpful thread on the topic.

But to the question. Adding a 1GB on top of your already 512 will eliminate the "dual" aspects of your DDR2 memory. In order to run in dual/alternating mode, both memory chips must be the same size. That will be far more an issue than latency. Although it is a good esoteric discussion, to get real, the difference between 10 and 12 is waaaay below what any person outside the space program will ever notice. :D :D :D

re: Timing to be exact on both stick to enable dual support?

#8 Post by fjearr » Thu Jul 28, 2005 8:44 am

Hi Guys.

Thanks for the posts guys, was great and extremely informative and helpful. Its always good to understand whats going on, and thanks for being patient and explaining =)

Now one last question, the definitive one.. being.. do both sticks on a T43 need to have the exact timing 4-4-4-10 each for it to enable dual support? or can one be 4-4-4-10 and the other 4-4-4-12..

I beleive another person has answered a previous post of mine asking this exact same question as they had noticed with a desktop motherboard that both sticks of ram had to be exact timing wise otherwise it wouldnt enable it..

Would appreciate input from the memory experts on this.

I would not worry about dual channel. Even if the timings are the same, some manufacturers recommend the exact same memory chips on each module for it to work, so there is no guarantee (i.e. same memory brand and memory line). That is why they sell dual channel kits; they've been tested to work. Even if you get it to run, you're looking at a 5% gain MAX. The benifit of getting more RAM far outways getting it to work in dual channel.

re: Timing & Dual Channel

#10 Post by fjearr » Thu Jul 28, 2005 4:58 pm

Hi Guys.

I have just installed another 512mb Samsung PC2 4200 DDR2 522, 4-4-4-10 piece and it now works successfully in Dual Channel Mode on Memtest.

My standard 512mb Piece was 4-4-4-12 timing, so its still running 4-4-4-12 timing on Memtest but the Dual Channel has been enabled.

Just to help out those guys thinking of upgrading their memory and wanting to take advantage of dual channel.

Cheers
