X61T freezing / crashing

#1 Post by gohankong » Thu Aug 01, 2024 6:44 am

Last week i installed Linux Mint XFCE. It was great until 2 days ago, when it froze and had to hard reset it.
Did it again while trying MX Linux from usb boot and after installing it did again.

I don't think it's the RAM, because 2 of the times it only had a browser with one tab open and notes. Also i tried opening a lot of apps (around 12-15) with 2 browsers open with a lot of tabs, both on Mint and MX, it was okay.

I read an older post about the kernels version causing this problem, but this is the latest version of MX and Mint, which is with different/newer kernels. I don't know what the kernels are or do, but yeah. Any ideas what i can do?

Thank you in advance!

Run memtest86+ anyways. A few months ago I've had an X61 suddenly freeze a few times. Ran memtest86+ and bam! Memory failure.

The X61T is old enough to be in high school if it were a person  , its components are bound to break down.

A shot in the dark: what's the condition of the battery? Have you tried running the machine on AC adapter only ?

So i ran memtest and diagnostics, it says it ok

Swapped ram sticks nests and after i did that there appeared an error on booting

I want to put an SSD and new thermal paste, but i want to make sure the freezing is able to be fixed

That's an old version of memtest86.

Here's where you should get it: https://memtest.org/

A quick search for the error give me this interesting forum thread: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1249165 ... d-graphics
I have similar problem as yours on my Thinkpad W520 and similar CPU error message.

It is a hardware issue as I tried switch to Windows 7 and my screen flickers the same way. The issue has to do with overheating.

I increased the fan speed to maximum using "Thinkfan" and I rarely have the problem anymore.

Memtest86 is different from Memtest86+. (notice the plus sign)

The latter is open-source and free as beer.

You didn't even check my link, didn't you.

Clean the heatsink and fan, then change the thermal paste as well. You'll also need a thermal pad 0.5mm thick because there's one sandwiched between the heatsink and the northbridge chip (which contains the memory controller and intel graphics). 25mm x 20mm is OK.

Question: how hot is it where you live?
At higher ambient temps (> 30 Celsius) the heatsink becomes less effective at cooling the processor and chipset.
