Memtest86

Many bootable linux CDs have it. I write the image file in FC to a jumpdrive, boot from the jumpdrive and run Memtest86.

dd if=diskboot.img of=/dev/sda

Download the bootable ISO file. Burn ISO image to CD with RecordNow or Nero or Roxio, etc.

Did you burn as an image?
In RecordNow, right most tab (Backup Projects) -> Burn Image.

I tried to create a bootable CD with Record Now that came with my T42. But my CD wouldn't boot either. I couldn't see anything I was doing wrong. After several attempts with Record Now, I ended up using Nero on another older laptop to create my bootable CD. That one booted just fine.
