Multiburner firmware update???

#1 Post by IBMnoob » Wed Jul 27, 2005 10:34 pm

Hi all,

I just bought the Model 73P3312 Multi burner for my R50p and tried burning some dvd's and this baby is too slow it only writes at 2.4x and the specs says it should write at 8x are there any solutions for this to write to 8x e.g. firmware updates? this drive is made by matshita UJ-830S, i just check the ibm site with no luck. how about the NEC-6650 drive? has anybody done this modification with their lappy? i just want to be able to burn dvd's with a decent speed not at 2x wich is too mediocre.

pls help

Thanks

Matshita drives are a bit fussy with DVDs. I have them on both my R50p and cant burn faster than 2x with riteks and princos. It burns my Taiyo yudens at 8x though.

As far as transplanting another drive, its not as easy as with earlier thinkpads (T20-T30 etc) that use the more common female connector.
R50 and later use an integrated male connector (uncommon) and most drives wont swap over without major surgery......soldering correct connector.
I have seen a guy on ebay in germany that does conversions for the "ultrabay enhanced" to a toshiba drive. I was almost going to get one, but that model doesnt do DVD-RAM which I need.
Ideally I'd like the conversion on the Hitachi-LG 8x drive. I have one in a USB2 case and it burns all disks and fast.

Thanks for your reply DaveO. ive read in diif. forums about the matshita drives and its very picky with dvd media you would have to find a compatible media to be able to burn in 8x, il try that Taiyo Yudens and hope that it works for me too.

Thanks
