Samsung 980 NVMe M.2 not being detected on T480

#1 Post by Novaraptor » Thu Nov 07, 2024 11:36 pm

Hi everybody

I just bought a Samsung 980 500GB NVMe for my T480. But after installing it, it won't detect the drive in
BlOS nor diskpart when trying to install windows 11. When i install my 128gb SATA drive, it is being detected just find. Do i need to do something in the bios or does anybody know what is wrong. I have read something about the caddy being the wrong version.

My caddy version is "CT470 NS-A933"
Cables says "CT470 M2 cable DC02C009M10 REV 0A SC10G75210 LUXSHARE-ICT 18/11/26"

Do you have a USB NVMe enclosure? If only to verify that the SSD works.

Hi BillMorrow

Thank you 😊

Yes, i have updated the BIOS to latest version 1.52

Hi Axur-delmeria

Yes, i tested the SSD in another pc and it worked fine.

I have also tried using another 256 SATA M.2 SSD and it detects it fine as well.

a head scratcher for sure..
does the T480 support TB size SSD's..
check the lenovo web site for that particular thinkpad for any limitations..

Yes, it is very strange.

I just checked with the shop where i bought it and they said that their supplier told it supported up to 512GB on Nvme SSD. Could it be the adapter? :)

The T480 parts list includes these:
1024G, M.2, 2280, PCIe3x4, SAM, OPAL SOLID STATE DRIVES 00UP492
1TB, M.2, 2280, PCIe 3x4, TOS, OPAL SOLID STATE DRIVES 00UP648
1TB, M.2,2280, PCIe3x4, WD, OPAL SOLID STATE DRIVES 00UP684
So yes, T480 supports 1TB drives.

Unless there's a BIOS setting that disables access to the PCIe lanes for the NVMe slot, my educated guess points to the M.2 caddy and/or cable.

Could it be that the caddy adapter only supports SATA M.2. I read somewhere that some caddy adapters only support SATA M.2 SSD's and not NVMe.

Hi Everybody

I just bought a new adapter from China and it arrived today. It works great and I can see the Nvme drives now. So the problem was the adapter.
