Faint Beep while minimizing and maximizing windows
Hi all. I have a thinkpad t41 2373, and late at night when all is quiet, i can hear a faint (very faint) beep sound from the left side every time i minimize and maximize windows. it is very faint and can only be heard when there are virtually no other noises. anyone else have this problem or have heard of this problem? there also is a noise that sounds like static coming from the same area. thanks.
If you can hear this noise only when your laptop is on AC power, check out this thread http://tinyurl.com/2yaes
Let me give you a brief summary coupled with my observations:
1. it happens when you do something that engages graphic acceleration; I could hear it when maximizing/minimizing windows, using Photoshop or even browsing some web pages. For example go to www.apple.com then .Mac - iCards and try to move your mouse over iCards categories on the right
2. the noise disappears when you change color depth to 16-bit
3. I removed the keyboard and tried to identify the source of the noise; it seems to be the Radeon chip. You can hear it near the center of the keyboard but also, as you mentioned, on the left side of the laptop (I guess it's because of the vent)
4. actually I began to hear the noise when I bought additional AC adapter P/N 08K8204, FRU 08K8205. It's known to be faulty and it's mentioned in the above thread that IBM will exchange it if you happen to have it. For some reason the noise is much louder with this adapter; however, it's also there (but much more silent) with other AC adapters
5. I planned to send my T40 (2373-92U) for repair, but first I went to RCS store in NYC and I checked three T4x Thinkpads (T40, T40p and T41p); I could hear the noise in all of them so I assumed its a kind of "normal" thing and gave up. BTW imagine the look RCS salesmen gave me when I was doing it
6. the only thing you can do to reduce it is to a) replace your AC adapter if you have the one I mentioned; b) go to Control Panel - Display - Settings - Advanced - Troubleshoot and decrease the graphic acceleration by a notch. In my case it eliminated the noise to a level that I can barely hear it only when I almost touch the keyboard with my ear
Hope this will help

the speakers are on mute.ian wrote:You'll probably find the volume is up too high - particularly if you're hearing static
matyst - i went to apple.com and did the thing, but there was no beep. it still only happens when minimizing or maximizing windows, one beep per window.
ah well.... as long as it's "normal", i guess there isn't a lot i can do about it.... otherwise fantastic machine.
