I got my T43p... I have some questions, please help!

I got my laptop, and I am in love, but I have a few questions.

Can I have my passwords remembered by the fingerprint scanner? Can I encrypt data using the fingerprint scanner? Should I install the Advance Secutiy, and what is the advance security, and what does it change?

Thanks!

yes when you go into the setup for the fingerprint reader it will ask you for your passwords and 4 fingers. you have to download the software from IBM website to use the security chip feature. and yes they do talk to each other. if you want more than file or folder encryption you will have to get a program that is out. I will have to look it up I dont remember the name of it you can also do a search on here for it. The software from IBM is not that easy to set up so unless you have a good grasp of computers you may not want to try it. As for what it changes Nothing really. it allows the security chip to hold your passwords. If I mised anything please let me know.

I got it to work... but it is really weird. When I encrypt a file, sometimes it asks me for my fingerprint, sometimes it asks me for my passphrase, but most of the time, it just enctypts the file without asking me anything, and the same for decryption... wtf? what is the use of this if anyone can encrypt/decrypt anything. Is there any way so that every time I encrypt/decrypt that it asks for my fingerprint?

Save what sanity you have before you attempt to play Admin on the Security Subsystem.

Holy passphrase -- this thing is obtuse. I get the impression it's meant to be set up by some Corporate IT dept that has a shelf of 3-ring binders and certificates.

That, and any time I try to change my local policies to do things like you describe (require a fingerprint every time), it says it can't sign the new policy.

Get a notepad and a pencil to write down all the passwords you will have to chose.

And when it first asks you if you want the Simple model (file encryption), or the Full Deal, think carefully since there seems to be no way to chose differently later.

When you're all done messing with it, the option you're looking for is in the BIOS "Enable Security Chip: Disable". Back to PGP for me...
