Possibility of swapping P15 G2 GPU MXM card from P17 G2?

#1 Post by techalive » Sat Mar 22, 2025 10:20 am

Hey, is it possible to swap GPU card from ThinkPad P17 Gen 2 to ThinkPad P15 Gen 2? I saw there is - despite of different size laptops - the same of MXM cards dimension in P17 G2 and P15 G2 but have different FRU: 5C51C94230 (for P17 G2) and 5C51C94209 (for P15 G2).
Overall: I want to exchange my RTX A2000 4GB in P15 G2 to reference A5000 16GB taken from P17 G2 unit. I heard that it must be flashing a GPU BIOS (so to A5000 from P17 write BIOS taken from P15 A5000 (which is also appear to mounted in this units)).
Please leave your knowledge.

Hi everybody. One word: possible! The dimensions this both card are the same, the BIOS is the same. So, only two obstacles exist:
1.) The old cooling system to A2000 GPU card isn't identical as to A5000 card (there are some more elements on A5000 which need to be cooling all the time)
2.) The FRU is probably checked by P15 Gen2 unit, so during POST the BIOS coughs and beeps the communicate: 2203: “System configuration is invalid. Press ESC to continue”
Walkaround this problems I described and placed a photos on this thread:
Request for BIOS file of nVidia GeForce RTX A5000 from ThinkPad P15 Gen 2
Take a look and cheers!
