X30 - AC Power beeps on and off

#1 Post by ThinkpadEsq » Fri Jul 29, 2005 2:35 pm

My X30 has been having this problem for a couple months. If I'm working with the laptop when not at a desk, the power noise will sometimes beep on and off 2-5 times and the power management icon will reflect as such. I don't think the power is slipping in and out (I have two different AC units that both result in this problem). Any ideas?

Ahh... nice...

Either your power adaptor has a bad cable, or the power socket on the motherboard has become loose. Hope and pray that it's the power adaptor. If it's not, hope and pray that your X30 is still in warranty. If it isn't, you're either going to have to resolder the power connector, or buy a new motherboard.

I have two AC's, so I suppose it is not the cable. Is it definitely the MoBo in that case? Should I send it in to ez-serv?

Have you tried both AC adaptors with another ThinkPad? If they work, then it's the mobo. If they don't, try a known good AC adaptor.

If it's still in warranty, then yes, send it in to EZ-Serv. Otherwise, open up your X30, grab a soldering iron, warm it up, and touch it to the contact points where the power connector connects to the motherboard. Hold it to each one until you *JUST* see the solder start to melt, then pull it away.

Thanks for the info, and you're right that it was the power connector. It is getting progresively worse, and I'm sending this thing in to IBM tomorrow.
