Difference TP a/b/g and a/b/g II mini-pci cards?

#1 Post by richarddd » Fri Jul 29, 2005 2:55 pm

Is there any meaningful difference between ThinkPad 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Adapter II (US) and ThinkPad a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Adapter, other than that the older one is much more expensive?

If I missed something in search, please point me in the right direction[/quote]

the new one type II, you can't use the extended chanel 12-14...that's why it is for the US only per FCC regulation about unauthorized chanels...

Type I is the one you can make use of it...i think it's still possible to use those 12-14 chanels outside of the US. That's why it's more expensive.

other than that, these cards are the same

Anyway, these are in layman term per my limited knowledge....

I actually haven't seen either of the cards personally, but when I was looking into this issue a few days ago, it seemed that maybe they had a different form factor, and were not interchangeable in the same laptop. I may be completely wrong here, but it seems that with any particular laptop you can order one or the other - you don't get a choice. It may be that the connection is different, or the physical size or shape of the cards is slightly different. Someone should chime in that has seen both cards up close.

Yes, they do seem to be the same form factor. On the pages I looked at the other day, one listed as having a Mini PCI form factor, and another Mini PCI IIIb form factor. But upon looking further, they are both the same.

So far, I haven't run across baraider's reference about either of these cards supporting extended channels. Both are listed as having FCC approval. I understand your confusion regarding the difference between the 2 cards. I'm confused. They both are listed as being compatible with certain laptops, but other laptops list only one type as being compatible. The following is what I have found to date:

It's not clear that the list of compatible laptops is corect.

From other sources, I've heard either that the two are virtually identical or that the newer one has better power consumption.

There also may be a difference in compatibility, but that seems more a function of TP's blocking access (error 1802) than anything real.

Totally unclear why the newer one should be so much cheaper.
