But why don't we see other device such as "Ultrabay USB + Firewire + Compact Flash Reader"
Or something pretty useful that doesn't stick out of our PCMCIA/Expresscard/USB ports?

I use an optical drive only for backup purposes. But if there was an Ultrabay that had an all format card reader this would be better than optical disks as I could transfer cards to from Pocket PC and cameras. And such a reader would surely also leave space for a small (1.8cm?) HDD to provide even more backup. And probably for a Firewire 400 and 1 or 2 other useful ports too.

I'm sure someone more knowledgable will pipe up here, but it seems that the ultrabay can only handle IDE(drives), power(batts) and basic serial(numberpad).

Which means you could do up a multi-format card reader, but probably not firewire or USB ports.

what kind of tech do firewire and rs-232 need? and would the situation with external sata connectors be similar?

You forgot to mention Ultrabay Legacy 1.44 floppy, zip drives.

If you want a solution to your post, build a desktop - all can be done quite easily

There is one ultrabay accessory part that nobody has mentioned yet: Part number 13N5108

edit: looks like you can't link to the part... bummer. Its the "blank bezel"...

Granted of limited functionality, but nothing beats the weight
