New T440p owner, question about optimal temps

#1 Post by Shadoe » Sun Aug 03, 2025 12:41 pm

Recently picked up two T440p’s off eBay. Both are the nvidia models and have 1080p displays. Running different flavors of Linux on them. Just upgraded the cpu in one to an i7 4712mq as that seems to be the best while maintaining the 37W TDP. My question revolves around acceptable temperatures for the dGPU. I’m kind of stress testing with various older games, and currently I’m trying master chief collection to see if games like combat evolved run fine. With the game’s menu up, nvidia-smi is showing my dGPU hovering around 90C. Is this an understandable range for this GPU considering the age of the laptop and the fact that it isn’t really designed for gaming in the first place, or is this indicative of a bad paste job on my part? CPU temps seem to be hovering around 70C. I used a generous amount of arctic silver 5 as that’s the paste I had on hand. Otherwise happy to own some T440p’s to tinker with! These are my first Lenovo laptops.

Instead of Arctic Silver 5, use PTM7950 phase-change thermal pad. And no, 90c is not an acceptable temperature, especially for such a weak GPU.

Are the generic ones I find on Amazon ok? I’ve also heard of thermal grizzly kryosheet, are those good?

Amazon ones might work well or might not. Instead of Thermal Grizzly kryosheet you should get Thermal Grizzly PTM. I am using it to cool down i7 4910 on T540p and it does a really good job. When idle it’s at around 40c which is pretty good for 47w TDP cpu.

IIRC genuine PTM7950 are sold by Moddiy and Linus Tech Tips.
