Keyboard ? problem

#1 Post by DRHamp » Sat Jul 30, 2005 6:11 pm

I know you're going to get tired of these newbie questions.

I bought a 600 (51U) off of EBay. I want to eventually load some Linux distro on it. I now just trying to get everything hardware-wise stable before I leave the W2000 Prof inst that's on it and go to Linux.

I have added upgraded the bios to the most current, upgraded the RAM and everything is good except --- an intermittant keyboard problem. The problem is associated with (3) keys only - G, H, and " (both upper and lower case) sometimes they are ok and work fine, sometimes they don't work at all.

I can get a replacement keyboard assy for about $40 on Ebay, but am afraid that it may be some other problem other than the keyboard assy.

So, three questions:
1. Is it likely the keyboard?
2. Is it difficult to replace the keyboard assy?
3. Is there somewhere else I should look other than the keyboard assy?

I have the Hdwe Maint pdf .... etc.

Thanks for any input/advice

If you have the hardware maintenance manual, keyboard replacement should go rather nicely, you'll just have to fiddle with the whole thing a little bit to get it off the case after the screws have been removed.

You might want to read my post further down the page under 8611 error. I gave a little advice there for someone else contemplating changing out a keyboard. Here is the link:

Thanks for the input -- I'm going to try thorough cleaning first before I replace the keyboard.

Are the keycaps removable on these keyboards? I don't want to force one off and break it if they arent.

Thanks again

You can remove them, you just have to be careful and it can be real tricky trying to get them reattached.

You might want to read these two threads before cleaning your keyboard:
