Intel 2200BG wireless in a 240

#1 Post by marvelousmarvyd » Sun Jul 31, 2005 12:56 am

Hello all,
I have a Thinkpad 240 300mhz that I uses for email and web surfing only. What I'm looking to do is put in Intel's 2200BG wireless cards and antenna inside. What I was wondering is if anyone has done this to a 240 already. If so what antenna did they use and was it put under the keyboard. I've seen several different antennas on ebay but am not sure which one would work best. I know I can go with a pcmcia card but I want to use the Intel wireless mini pci card instead. I've also check to see if anyone might have asked this question concerning this model on this forum with no luck. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I've done this on both 240 and 240x. It's faily simple as long as you are careful.

You can find wireless antenna on ebay for $12+S&H(not cheap but it's better than none)

80% of the task is to dissemble the monitor assembly and route the antenna wire around the edge of the screen. Make both wires go through the some hinge as the ribbon LCD cable does. The rest of the work will just be connecting the wire to the mini-pci card.

1. There are four screws around the monitor underneath the black sticky paper caps. Two latches holds the upper part of the assembly so do it carefully.
2. Avoid to take apart of the bazel with lots of force. The upper screw sockets inside the bazel are very fragile.
3. Always keep the LCD panel flat(without any wires on the back) while you route the wire.
4. Make sure the bazel can fit back into the monitor case/back cover nicely.
5. It's normal to see the keyboard a little bit tilted on the left after the work is done since the antenna wires are thicker than the LCD ribbon cable. It's not very noticeable.

Hi.

I have a ThinkPad 240X running Windows 2000 Pro SP4.

I installed the Intel 2200BG wireless card in place of the modem. Windows detects it and I grabbed the drivers from Intel and it is set up fine.

However I cannot for the life of me find a wireless util to setup SSID/WPA etc.

Am I doing something wrong. I know there is no WZC for 2000 and I installed the util/driver package from Intel but now I am lost.

Can anyone help?

Simon

It is possible to put 2200BG (and 2100PRO) into 240, but there is a problem of mysterious CPU overheating after that. This bug includes X20 and X21 also (but not X22/23 with their newer i830 chipset) that have the same BX/ZX chipsets.

It is not the card itself that creates heat, the card causes CPU to work full time and get hot+drain battery very fast.
