T42 + usb KVM = no power to devices?

i have a T42 on a port replicator which goes through a belkin usb KVM, now the weird thing is that on a cold boot after the machine has been off or hibernated all night, it gets stuck at the password prompt and there is no power to the keyb or mouse and the password cursor doesnt flash or blink = crashed?

now if i open the lid and enter the password in, it boots to the prompt and lets me enter it (using the laptop keyb), but after its entered in, i can power off the laptop using the power button or whatever, but the usb mouse/keyb then work even if the lid is then closed.

any ideas? i dont really want to disable the power on passwords just so this will work on cold boot but what choices do i have.

using bios 3.13 and the latest embedded controller.
