OCZ ram, reputable?

#1 Post by jonnnny » Sun Jul 31, 2005 2:11 pm

I've read a lot of posts about brand name ram such as kingston, crucial, corsair. but nobody seemed to mention OCZ, are they reputable? The name seems to be good when it comes to desktop memory, but I'm not sure about laptop ram.

Does anyone have any experience with OCZ laptop ram and can comment on this?

Also, i can get pc3200 ocz for cheaper than pc2700, i realize it'll run at pc2700 on my t41, but there wont be any bad side effects (i.e. more power usage) correct?

Thanks
Jon

There should be no side effects running faster rated memory at slower speeds.

I don't know much about OCZ, but I do know that their reputation over the past few years has improved (due to new ownership, I believe). AnandTech and other major hardware sites test their DIMM modules from time to time.

As for notebook so-DIMMs, I wasn't even aware that OCZ made them. I have always been partial to Crucial and Kingston modules.

OCZ has had a less than stellar reputation in the past which they've been trying to improve upon (successfully).

That said I still stick to Kingston/Crucial/Corsair/Mushkin and have no real reason to deal with OCZ.
X31, T43p (on sale soon I think :( ), T400

Like beerak said, OCZ is one of the top RAM manufacturers for desktops, especially for high-end systems and enthusiasts. They also manufactur sodimms, but I don't know the quality if it is as good as their desktop products. However, I would give it a try based on their excellent desktop ram performance.

I have OCZ in my desktop and I'm satisfied but I have no information about their ram for laptops :/ Maybe he should try some verified one.

OCZ has won more than one award from anandtech and about 100 more awards from overclocker sites. In desktop area, they are absolut HIGHEND and very stable on almost every board, like crucial ballistix. They use differnt kind of chips in different modules. Everybody who thinks OCZ is not a good brand simply dont know the current computer scene.

there are not to many companies that make ram. Actually just a few. It's expensive to make.

Most companies, buy it, test, rebrand, package, and sell.

That's why it's a bit of a coin toss as to the quality. One batch may have X brand chips, while another may have Y brand.

IMHO that's why Crucial rocks. They only use their parent company (micron) who sells to IBM and Apple among others.... so you know the quality is pretty consistant.

OCZ uses Infineon chips on it laptop ram.

It should be ok for normal use.
