Hardware compatibility - T23

#1 Post by dummkopf » Sun Jul 31, 2005 4:48 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to install a wireless card into my T23, but the thing doesn't like it. The question: is there a hardware compatibility list or known procedure to avoid this IBM-ish behavior?

I've never done a hack around this, but there is something called "no-1802" that you can search for on google. ThinkWiki has some information on this:

Best of luck :)

Unbelievable! I was aware of this little com file, but was sure T23 is too old for this IBM whitelist thing. So I tried to fix things with that mysterious Maintenance Disk. At least this is what IBM hardware repair manual says. In short, I tried everything but that no-1802.com. Mainly because the PCI-ID my card has is on whitelist for T42 (168c:0013). It definitely wasn't the case with T23!
Now I've got new problem. :( I had to remove the ethernet card because BIOS tells me I cannot have two eth cards at once. Insane. Anyone knows the way out of this?

Thanks a lot, Eng!

My T23 (2647-8NU - gone now) supported both the on-board wired Ethernet NIC and the mini-PCI wireless Ethernet NIC without difficulty. A friend has the machine and it works both wired and wirelessly. ... JD Hurst

Yes, I had 2647-4SU before and it had both. This one is 2647-2TU and doesn't co-operate. Why they have to do things so complicated at IBM...

The T23 was introduced in the second half of 2001, just before WiFi was common in notebooks. I think that the IBM firmware people probably did not ever think that your particular model would ever have a WiFi card installed...

My T23 has both also. Not a problem here.

Sure, but I still think this is a no-reason restriction, something IBM is famous for. I wonder if someone with both options installed could dump the BIOS and send to me... Would it cure the problem?

It's not a "no-reason restriction", it has to do with RFI emissions and the certification process required of IBM by various national entities.

There's no way IBM can have certified your T23 to work with a card that wasn't even made at the time your machine was manufactured.

Well, the error message does not say anything about wireless.
WARNING
01C9: More than one Ethernet devices are found. Remove one of them.
So, why i cant have two or more eth-cards?

That's a WINDOWS error message, isn't it? Don't blame IBM.

Try removing the Wifi card, install the drivers, then reinstall the WiFi card.

My old T23 has both WiFi and wired ethernet installed, I'll pull it off the shelf and check it as I can't recall which card is in it, although I think it's the Intel combo WiFi/modem card.

Nope. It's a BIOS error message. I'm running FreeBSD by the way.

BIOS and the embedded controller are both newest. Thank you, James. The funny thing is I can actually use both cards after bypassing that error message with Escape. The question now is how to get rid of this annoying beep and error message.
