I recently started getting a few unfriendly looking error messages on my install of windows XP and decided to reformat.
I have tried doing this on two different hard disks both seem to have the same problem. The reformat goes fine, the install goes fine but once windows starts up it seems to run very very slowly.
I have a disk with thinkvantage and all the relavant drivers for my machine but once I put it in an install the software it grinds to a total halt. I shut down try to restart and then get the black and white screen saying something along the lines of windows didnt shut down due to a recent hard/software change. It give me the standard options of restarting in safe mode or last known configuation etc etc. Which ever I choose my machine locks at this screen and will go no further.
I have tried doing this on two different hard disk niether of which I belive to be problematic.
Any ideas?

Odd problem reinstalling windows XP on R50e
Japanese R50e(1834-E8J), English XP, 1.5 ghz Celeron M, 1240 MB ram, 100gb HD, CD-RW/DVD
My first suspicion would be that you got infected with a virus. After the install of Windows, have you used any CD/s, DVD's, floppy's or USB keys at all? Did you restore any backups? Have you connected to the Internet at all? If the answer to any of the above is true, you may have inadvertantly infected your system with a virus. Also, are you sure that the Windows install CD that you have is a genuine original? If it is a copy, it may have been infected.
EDIT: You should install antivirus software before you connect to the internet to activate Windows.

Well that the thing, I cant even get as far as installing the drivers for the LAN connection so i havent connected to the internet. I havent used any USB devices or any media other than the backup which has the drivers on it and the Windows CD. I suppose that one of those may be infected. I will try making another backup of the drivers but I have used this windows disk on other machines with no problems. Thanks for the advice and I will give it a try but im not sure this is the problem.
