T42 and FireWire
Hi All:
My apologies if this has already been covered, but some fast searching of the forum didn't reveal the answer.
An easy (I hope) question: Is it possible to retrofit a T42 with a FireWire port? via a PCMCIA card or whatnot?
THANKS much,
Dutch

Yes it's easy to do that with a PCMCIA. However, you should be aware that you cannot charge or power a peripheral (like an iPod) from a FireWire port coming from a PCMCIA card. This is too bad because that was one of the best features of FireWire.
You can find cheaper FireWire cards at NewEgg:

Good luck!

I got my first PC - an IBM ThinkPad T43 (2687-DVU)!
Ah! Super! And pretty cheap, too...my favorite!
So this will perform just as if it were a built-in FW connector, in terms of speed, etc.?
As for the powering issue, I'm assuming any hardware I'd connect (audio interfaces, mainly) would come with their own power supplies, so I don't think it would be an issue.
THANKS for the good info.

While we're talking FireWire cards ...
Does anyone know of a FireWire card uses the whole height of the two slots (i.e. PCMCIA III) to keep the connectors flush with the case (i.e. nothing sticks out on the side of machine)?

Out of the 23 I just skimmed over on newegg, didn't look like any had that capability. That would be really nice though.skuehne wrote:While we're talking FireWire cards ...
