Using 11 A/B/G Wireless Lan MINIPCI Adapter II 73P4301 in EU

#1 Post by yao » Mon Aug 01, 2005 1:59 pm

Hello

Has anyone find a way to use
11 A/B/G Wireless Lan MINI PCI Adapter II 73P4301 (93P4262) for 13 European channels or is the only solution to buy three times more expensive 73P4302 (93P4262) unavailable at US (or is any other substitute 13 channel IBM card available there)?

Thank You

Yao

just order the card when you are in Europe, i.e. for Germany here:
http://www-134.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... Id=3063814

The new part number for the IBM a/b/g II EU card is 39T0083, which is a substitute for the 93P4264. The price is about 40 Euro. It supports 13 channels.

working with T40?

#3 Post by yao » Wed Aug 03, 2005 6:30 am

Hello s0larian

Thanks for the fast reply.

Do you know whether 39T0083 will work with t40? (2723_EU3) - it is described on IBM web as to be standartly used only with R50.

Thanks

It is working in my T40p very well, I just upgraded from my old a/b card to the 39T0083 a couple of weeks ago.

YES, it's possible to make the Wireless Lan MINI PCI Adapter II 73P4301 (93P4262) utilize all 13 European channels (or any other channel set for that matter). All you need is to change a few bits in the EEPROM. The process involves compiling and running a certain program under Linux. I've just done it, and i'm writing this while connected in channel 13 under WinXP. :) The procedure is one-time only, and future proof - since the info about the channel set is stored on the card itself, it will continue to work that way pretty much regardless of drivers or operating systems. To make long story short, this is how I did it:

- made myself a bootable Knoppix 4.0.2 CD (www.knoppix.com)

- downloaded the old version of the madwifi drivers from http://snapshots.madwifi.org/madwifi-old-current.tar.gz
and installed it step by step: http://www.madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/FirstTimeHowTo

- followed the directions given by Igor Muncie here: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.dr ... .user/4666
(skip step 2, it's irrelevant here). At first I wanted to give my card the European (ENEA) regdomain value, but then I decided to all the way and make it a worldwide card and set the regdomain to 0x00. Works like a treat on my T40p with my router set to channel 13 as I type this.

Of course, do realize that using channels above 11 is illegal in the US, and each country has its own regulatory domain too, so end-users shouldn't mess around with their card's properties, unless they're know what they're doing. Otherwise the FCC might get on your back, or something worse.

BTW, this is my first post on this forum, i hope somebody will find it useful.

greetings from Poland
Mikolaj
