Hi,

If you want to overclock, you need a clockgen/setfsb/.. program for your PLL chip. That is different from the 855 (chipset/northbridge..).... and the T4x series (the ones using the i855) have different PLLs depending on the model... for some of them, there is such a program, (i.e some T40s) for some others it has not been written yet, and for a third group (i.e some of the T42s models), it is impossible (they have a non programmable PLL).

Oh, I understand the concept quite well, I have a prometia on my desktop pc 3ghz@4.5gz def voltage and a water/pelt combo on my 6800gt.
The thing is I noticed you didn't post any links?
where are these said programs?
I've tried the i865 clockgen and to no avail.
I have also used the i855 tweaker for changing cas latency but I must say it didnt really do anything performance wise. I was able to change my cl to 1.5 just fine but with no real benefit.?

Hi,

Well, I was able to overclock a T40 with the STEFSB module for the X31 : linky. Others have reported some success with some T42s and T42s using clockgen for the intel platforms : linky.
But seriously, there are only a couple of threads dealing with T4x overclock... do a search and you'll have all the information in a few minutes reading...

Well, glad it worked. Now if you post your thinkpad model and which program you used (of the ones suggested), this information may be useful for others...

And now a quick advice. It may be wise (if not done so), to undervolt your processor a bit, to account for the added heat caused by overclock.
You can use the Centrino Hardware Control program to do so : http://www.pbus-167.com/chc.htm

one step ahead of you ;)
I used the x31 setfsb ver.
heres what I score in 3dmar01 on my t41p 1.6@1.8 fireGL T2 370/255
http://img281.imageshack.us/my.php?image=115057kk.jpg
11,505!!!

And 2687 in pcmark05

It even retains the overclock when I reboot oddly enough?.
Haven't tried powering down then booting but I'm guessing that it won't hard boot overclocked.
all in all I get a nice little punch of free performance.
So far my Thinkpad has been able to handle Everything I've thrown at it.
including doom 3, HL2 etc..

I used the setfsb program on my T42, and it worked OK until I got to 104 MHz fsb. After that, it just froze. I figured that it's not going to get me anywhere, so I stopped using the program.

Working great on this end.
The only limiting factor is that you cant lock the pci/agp bus.
I dont feel comfortable taking it any higher than this frankly.
here is a comparison of my t41p 1.6@1.84 against an dell inspirion 9100with a p4 and an oc'd 9700. using 3dmark03 btw..this is the fastest bench on the orb for the 9600/9700 class.
not too shabby really...
