X41 - Any gaming possibility?

#1 Post by HamTard » Tue Aug 02, 2005 9:34 pm

I know that ThinkPads aren't good for games, and that the X series would be the worst at it, but do you think with the GMA 900 it can handle modern 3D games (2003 to 2005) games at the ABSOLUTE LOWEST of settings with playable framerates (like average 20-30fps)? The minimum requirements of games are usually a bit higher than necessary for decent play at the absolute lowest possible settings, and I'd absolutely love an X41 but I want to play some games on any notebook I buy. Also, do you think the X32 with the Radeon 16mb video card would play games better than an X41 with the GMA 900 128mb shared memory?

The X41 has a MUCH better graphics card than the X31/2. You'll probably be able to play less-demanding games at low to medium settings. I can play RCT3 at low settings well with my X40. I would expect medium to high settings on a X41.

that's good to know, the RCT series is pretty fun. have you had any luck with more demanding 3d games on low settings? any RPGs or FPSs?

I have a friend who has an Acer and he plays medium settings at 1280 by 1024 on Halo. The graphics chip he uses is the Intel Extreme Graphics 2. I'm sure you can go on high settings with new intel chip.

Thanks for the replies guys. Anyone attempted something like Farcry, Half-Life 2, or Doom 3? I know this isn't a gaming machine, I just want to know its limitations.

Doom3!? I have an athlon xp 1700+ oc'd to 2000+ w/ 512 mb of dual channel PC3200 and a geforce 6800 GT and doom3 is still quasi choppy. My friend has an emachine with a athlon 64 3000/3200+ w/ a radeon 9600 and doom3 isn't very playable with it. Doom3 eats video cards for lunch. I doubt any X will get anything above 20 w/o monsters.

That's reasonable in theory, but I don't think anyone has attempted Doom 3 on an X41. If someone could, using the lowest resolution and settings, it would be interesting to see the results, and find out how good the GMA 900 works in real life situations.

Doom3 will not be very playable at all. Half-life2 could be playable if you force it into theDX 7/8 code path. I doubt you'll get through either game without visual problems or crashes. Dont think Intel puts too much money into the driver teams.

An example from gaming on my X41 is World of Warcraft - it manages around 15-25 FPS on average, though it drops in crowded places and during big battles. I wouldn't consider it 100% playable, but if you just want to check in for a bit of gaming it's decent. Haven't really tried any other games on it.

Here are my 3DMark scores on it:

3dmark01: 3494
3dmark03: 786
3dmark05: 199

Hope it helps!
