Am upgrading my 600e and have some questions.

Older ThinkPads.. from the 600, the 7xx, the iSeries, 300, 500, the Transnote and, of course, the 701

Am upgrading my 600e and have some questions.

#1 Post by seab » Tue Aug 02, 2005 11:29 pm

Hello, this is my first post here. I have read all the threads related to upgrading, and have made a bunch of notes.

I was told a couple of days ago, by a man who works on laptops for a living, that my 600e would not accept an upgrade to a 600X P111 500mhz processor, because the motherboard would be burned up.

The threads here all indicate that the upgrade can be successful, so I want to try it, but I have some size-related questions.

My 600e 366mhz is a 2645 4AU. The new processor I bought off EBay is a 600X P111 500mhz MMC-2, PML50002101AB.

Are there any cpu size related problems, or is it truly unscrew the old module and screw the new one on/in?

If I add a cooler/fan that fits a 600X cpu, is the size of the fan just the same as the fan on the 600e, and do I just plug into the 600e without cutting/splicing/connector modifications (same connector as for the old fan)? Any specific fan I should purchase?

Where on the heat sink do I use Artic Silver 5, and how much Silver 5 do I use?

I am sure that this is really easy for a technical person, but as much as I would like to think I know what I am doing, I will hate to open up the 600e, using the hardware manual I have downloaded, and find that nothing fits as I thought it would. Thanks for any specifics you can advise.

Okay, I figured out the heat sink and the Arctic 5: just enough to cover: remove any excess (I originally missed a posting that addressed that point).

Laptop wizard.....can you help me with the other questions regarding size and fit of cpu and fan, so I know what to buy and what to expect when I open the TP? Thanks.

Hey Seab
Any MMC-2 modual will fit your laptop, it's just screwed down to the MB.
and there is a weird peice on the PC card assembly that holds it down as well, your laptop is the EXACT same laptop, and the EXACT same CPU.
it will work, just make sure you put the power leap utility on it to force L2 in the OS or things will get unstable, no kneed to disable on board ram by the way
Make sure you press the modual firmly on both TOP sides at the same time untill pressed in, it's fun to do 8)
see ya.
