Upgrading my 600, need CMOS battery

My CMOS battery is dead and I've tried searching on this topic but it seems that every other thread has the words "CMOS" or "battery" in them so it wasn't much of a help.

I need to know what type of CMOS battery my Thinkpad 600 2645-35U takes, and where can I get them

I have multiple upgrades coming in (processor, battery, RAM, optical drive, hard drive) and wanted to make sure i have all the bases covered

Here is one place you can get your battery. If you are going on the cheap, you can search on e-bay or Google the part number (02K6502) and perhaps find one for less.

Thanks for that model # upon searching I found out its just a regular CR2025 battery with a wire attached to it, time for some ghetto PC repair!

forget paying $17 for one I'm going to the store and getting some duracells

DO NOT solder to the battery! It can overheat and dramatically shorten the life of the cell. In the worst case, it can catch fire.

If doing it yourself, tape it. Batteries Plus, or your local battery store, can sell you the cell for $3 or so and spot weld your existing wires to it and shrinkwrap it so it looks almost like factory made, sometimes for free.

Ditto whizkid. I've read that lithium batteries can catch fire or explode if exposed to excessive heat.

I saw what you saw when I replaced my battery in my 600E, but I bought one with the leads attached. I wasn't going to take any chances soldering to a lithium cell.

i just replaced mine, $2.09 for a cr2025 from home depot...
I used an exacto knofe to carefully slit the original battery wrapping, then carefully pried off the connector tabs. the original connectors are "pinched" onto the battery, so you have to work them a bit, but they come off easy enough. i did soldier the new ones on, by heating the tabs (NOT the Battery) until the soldier ran, then just layed them on the battery before it cooled. its not the greatest bond, but it works, and very little heat actually conducts the battery itself , then a bit of vynil tape to make sure it stays put. next i put the original plastic casing back on and installed it.. works like a charm..

cold weld would probably work better though..and is safer...

924guy, you are a maniac. The solder bond you described is a cold joint, and is worse than just taping the leads in place. It will fail if you look at it funny. A good solder joint requires that everything be nice and hot for the solder to flow on both surfaces.

The tabs were not pinched on, they were spot welded.

lol, i didnt say i did it "right" , i just said it worked for me

besides if hp can incorporate cold joint into their high end laptops, i can use one on my tp battery..., well okay, maybe they arent doing it on purpose...but then again....

dont try this at home kids...

yeah, i need to read more of these posts, good stuff in here, perhaps ill stop myself from further "alternative fixes" ...
