the Dell Forums are full of people with problems to solve. Sorry, we just haven't got as many problems.... :D Although I have wondered why there was no community forum associated with the IBM site. :? I found this place thru Google.

Hahaha, those Dell users are a funny group. Even in the non-technical threads most of the quesions are like, "What's Outlook" "Where's the power button" "How do I email?

You look in the IBM threads the questions are like, "Does the fingerprint reader work in zero darkness" "Where is the encyption data located for the IDE hard drive password protection" and "I want uber-silence, how do I override the voltage timmings on the CPU to lower the temps of the CPU allowing the fan to remain off"

ya I have to agree with anthony.

Bill why is this site not listed as a community forum on IBMs TP site? If we could get IBM involved and have some sort of tech support from IBM that would be great. I think you have enough people on here to get IBMs attention.

The TP community is not new and has moved around over the years.

First there was the TP forum on CompuServe with real support from IBMer's and the TP Mailing List with real support from enthusiasts.

Then IBM shut down the CIS forum and opened forums on their web site, and Bill opened this forum on his web site. The TP Mailing List continued on as before.

over a year ago i change to this new format..

IBM's forums were... less than effective. Bill's forum and the TP Mailing List continued on as before.

Bill moved his forum to a new format, and it and the TP Mailing List continued on as before.

I'm not sure when the CIS forum started, but the first e-mails in the TP Mailing List archive date back to October 1993. The very first month or so isn't in the archive.

Some of us have been here for a long time.

IBM/Lenovo complains that people who come here will confuse this site and forum with the "real" IBM/Lenovo sites..

i am a PC var through an association (partnership) with another vendor..
which is the lowest of the low..
currently, i am trying to upgrade to business partner..

there ARE some ibm or lenovo people who drop in but nothing is official..

Instinct tells me to say: "tough". Vendors will inevitably come here and see that good people hang out here because Bill's site offers genuine value to us, and as well, a sense of community. Thank you, Bill, for maintaining this forum. ... JD Hurst

I second that, JD. A big thank you to Bill for sponsoring and maintaining these forums. This is a great place and part of the reason I got back into thinkpads. This forum is run better without any IBM/Leveno interference
and people that are here are more than willing to help out with the few small problems that occur with Thinkpads.

Yes, free it is. So as a gentle reminder to all, treat the lions, tigers bulldogs and pirhanna fish providing the free support with reasonable care and respect. :)

This site is definately great. It is also where I was able to purchase my thinkpad from.

notebookforums.com is another site, but works will all brands and models, so it does get rather crowded.

This place is nice and small for specific needs.

The CS site was great for a number of years. There were some really good IBM'ers from around the globe who monitored it - officially and unofficially.

The IBM site was terrible! Slow loading with half #&$$&*& answers from IBM. Bill's first site was much better but still a little slow. This forum is great!

The ibm.ibmpc.thinkpad news group is also pretty good.

Thanks Bill.
Chas.

Yeah, I had forgotten the order. Can't think how I could have forgotten, though, since I hate web forums and didn't particularly like the old format (or this one, for that matter) in comparison to either TapCIS for CIS or Agent for newsgroups.

I just went back and looked at my TapCIS folder. When IBM announced that they were shutting the CIS forum, that IBMer Rick Merkle and I were PMing back and forth. He had asked me for suggestions, and I was pushing him to do newsgroups instead of a web forum. Then he just vanished.
