memtest86 using disk on key dosn't work .. ?
I tired the CD route first with no success - just didn’t boot.
so i borrowed a Dell 128 disk on key.
i copied the file into it and tried to boot and got boot error.
i assume i'm suppose to format or make it bootable ?
never used on of those , how you make them bootable ?
thanks Danny

Re: memtest86 using disk on key dosn't work .. ?
Several months ago I made a slipstream Win XP, SP2, CD with raid drivers. I was unable to get a CD that would boot with the IBM RecordNow! program that was included on my T42, or with Roxio that was on my desktop PC. The only CD that would boot was the one I made with Nero that I had on a ThinkPad 600E. (Note: I used Isobuster in conjuction with each burning program.)danny_isr wrote:I tired the CD route first with no success - just didn’t boot.
So maybe the reason you couldn't get a bootable CD was the burning program that you were using. You shouldn't have any problem with Nero, if you know all the settings. Nero has many more options than the other programs I used.
One extra tip: Use a CD/RW disk when you are trying to make a bootable CD. Once you've got the process down, then burn one on a CD/R.

How are you translating the MemTest86+ image into a hard disk filesystem?
I'm not following you.. first you had a CD Image (ISO right?) then you're putting it on a USB Key (Not ISO). How's that work?
I've had no problem taking the standard MemTest86+ .ISO image and burning that to CD-ROM (as an image) using Nero, EasyCD, or others. It boots quickly and runs.
Recorder->Burn Image
That's really all there is to it -- it's a bootable CD-ROM image

i guess you made a data cd with that iso in it? haha. no, you have to restore that iso to a cd. make sure your bios is set to boot to cd firstdanny_isr wrote:I tired the CD route first with no success - just didn’t boot.

hmmm i guess no one going to explain how to work with the Disk on Key.
i know people here did it .
So why no one bother to explain.
I'm sure if the topic of this thred was "T43 FAN problem" or "which is better T43 Or T42"
then i would get tons of replies here .

Maybe instead of getting all negative, you could start by explaining what it is you're trying to do, what you have tried already, and what kind of failure you're getting.
I read your post several times trying to figure out what you meant, and couldn't find out enough to help you, so I asked for more info.

Others require a tool like the HP Thumbdrive reset tool, or Linux (syslinux).
Have you tried the program here that seems to do what you want:

What does this mean, "tired the CD route"? How did you make the CD? What program did you use to burn it? Where did you get your ISO image, and what was the file called? Did you try the instructions that came with it -- and the simple disc burner they recommend?I tired the CD route first with no success - just didn’t boot.
I don't think anyone but you is surprised by this. You can't just copy an ISO image onto a disk drive (USB or otherwise) and expect it to boot. It's a raw dump of a CD-ROM.so i borrowed a Dell 128 disk on key.

I'm not all negative just trying to get some help here.
I used the Record Now , with the option to make the CD boot selected.
the image i used was Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)

I didn't find instruction with it.

yes i tried the # Download - Pre-Compiled EXE file for USB Key (Pure DO

The CDR is about 8 cents or less. Why don't you just burn one and throw it away instead of agonizing about how to make your USB key work? You can use a lot of free program to burn the disk or even Nero trial if Record now didn't work for you. I am just wondering
T43 2668-75U: 2GHz, 14.1" SXGA, 2GB RAM, 64MB ATI x300, DVD Recordable, IBM 11a/b/g Wi-Fi Wireless II, Bluetooth, Fingerprint Reader.
I did try few of them and it didn't work ,and my roomte got a disk on key so i thought it was simpler ....

Ahh.. so you just want it to work, not specifically on the USB Drive.
Cool.. that's much simpler. Lots of ways to make the bootable disc.
Here's the thing.. the image you download of MemTest86+ is a ".ISO" image.. I think maybe this is where you're getting bunged up. It's not a useful file as-is.. Not a .EXE, not a .ZIP, not anything like that. It's a straight image dump of a whole CD-ROM.. top to bottom, A to Z. You need a tool that will write this .ISO image straight to CD-ROM.. no features, no loader, no directories.
You don't want a .ISO file on a CD-ROM, you want the reconstructed CD-ROM that is represented in the image. You want to pour it out into the glass and add water.
Under Nero Burning ROM, you do this with "Recorder->Burn Image"
If you don't have Nero, you can download the demo. If you don't want to, because it's huge and, a demo, you can try free tools to do the same thing:
Here's a free tool that burns ISO images:

Here's another:

For what it's worth, here's what I'm seeing on my T43:
This is a 1.86GHz 2687 with 2x512MB memory.
Code: Select all
L1 Cache: 64KB 22988MB/s
L2 Cache: 2048K 10120MB/s
Memory 1023M 1454MB/s
Chipset: Intel i915PM/GM
FSB: 133MHz DDR-2
DDR532 CAS 4-4-4-12 / Dual Channel (Interleaved)
Worked !
i went with this

Bootable USB key - updating CDROM firmware on T23
Making a USB memory devise bootable:
I had a hell of time updating the firmware on a CDRW drive I use with my T23. IBMs Thinkpad firmware updating software was not designed for their own systems. They insist that you boot from a floppy while keeping the CD drive in the laptop at the same time. How are you supposed to do that when both occupy the same slot and you can't have both of them plugged in at the same time? So here's the steps I went through to tackle this issue.
Things u will need:
2 blank floppies
1 USB Memory key
1. First make a bootable floppy disk and keep it in the A drive for the USB bootable operation. Even better go to http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/Firmware_FAQ.html and look under the heading The Firmware Flashing Bootdisk and download the floppy image and install this.
2. Next go to HP and Download the Windows-based Format Utility for HP Drive Key or DiskOnKey USB Device version 2.1.8 A http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files ... 21284.html
This softpaq contains a Windows-based format utility for the HP Drive Key or DiskOnKey USB 2.0 device. I suspect this tool will work with most USB memory devices. I found that this tool also worked on a Lexar 128mb Jumpdrive. After downloading the file from HP install it. It will install itself to C:\Drivekey directory.
3. Attach you USB memory drive to your computer and run the program called HPUSBW.exe found in C:\DriveKey. You will have to point to the A drive for your bootable sample. Next copy the remaining files from drive A to your bootable USB drive and any other utilities you would like to use.
4. Next run Nero's Info tool on the laptop to see what drive type you have and the firmware number or run the IDEDIAG.exe utility found on the Firmware Flashing Bootdisk.
5. From the IBM website I downloaded the correct file based upon info you obtained above. Extract the file downloaded from IBM to a floppy.
Goto the floppy and open file name FW.PRO using Wordpad.
Look for a listing of your drive, it will look something like this:
; HLDS : GDR-8081N
;
"HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8081N","0010","0012","","81upi120.EXE" ,"","","FWDV1302"
For instance, the GDR-8081N I found on the disk labeled FWDV1302 that you should have downloaded from IBM and the firmware update file is named 81UPI120.exe. The "0010" is the firmware on the current device it is looking for and the "0012" is what version the utility will update it to. Copy this file to your bootable USB drive.
6. Now insert the USB drive into your nootbook and reboot. Select F1 to go into the BIOS. Select STARTUP and change the drive selection to boot from the USB drive and not from the hard drive. You must select the hard drive and press the INS button to make sure it will not read the hard drive upon bootup. F10 to close and save and reboot - but make sure your DVD/CD drive that you are going to update is inserted before doing this. Once the computer has booted select Minimal Boot from the menu if using the Firmware Flashing Bootdisk image. Finally run firmware flashing program you copied to the USB drive from the floppy drive in step 5 and follow the screen directions.

Re: Bootable USB key - updating CDROM firmware on T23
Question. When you format the USB key using the procedure above, does it format the whole key? In other words, if you already have files stored on the key, will they be erased? Or does it create some sort of partition on the USB key, or merely copy a boot sector and sys files on it?ssm0003 wrote:2. OK so now when it works . How long i need to run it ? (does it have an end or is it one big loop ?)
i run it for about 10 hours and no errors .
Do i need to configure the test or just let it run on the default settings ?
