700ED Help
I just bought a used 700/ED with a DEVA card. It really needed to be reformatted, so I put XP PRO on it and now my DEVA card doesn't work. I looked for drivers on this forum and tried several links that all seem to dead end. I understand that the W2K drivers work, as does DVDExpress, but I can get anything to work on the Lenovo site.
Can some one please email me the installation files I need, if so contact me off line. Or, if you know where I can get them, please point me to a link that works.
Also I just installed 128mb of RAM and it only reports 220088 on boot up, what gives, and how do I fix it ?
Thanks in advance for any help for this Nubie !

Following are some links I found. Note, sometimes it seems Lenovo's site is down, so if you get a page not found error, try again later. I hope these links do you some good.

Thanks much !
It says that the DVDExpress file is just an update, will this install the whole DVDExpress utility on my HD, or do I need to get that somewhere else and then upgrade it ? I don't think I have all of the original 770/ED disks.
I have updated the system Bios, and installed the configuration utility. Is it necessary to update the CD/DVD-ROM firmware too ?

Regarding DVDExpress, if I'm not mistaken, that is commercial software that you have to buy. The update by itself won't work. Try sickofit's solution. I haven't tried using Windows Media Player for DVD's, as I have CyberLink's PowerDVD.Guitarstar wrote:Thanks much !

It should not be necessary to update the firmware, but it may help if you have trouble playing certain DVD's. I have an old 600E that I passed to my daughter. It plays most DVD's, but not all. I haven't done any firmware updates on the CD/DVD-ROM, but maybe I should for my daughter's sake.

Hello...
Okay, first off,let me say that I found that if you tried all sorts of drivers before finding the right one, that even after installing the right one,it would play choppy....so if after you install this driver, and its still screwy, than do a fresh install of XP,then before anything else, install these drivers in this order (I would burn a cd with windows media player 10 and install that first, and do a reboot after installing each one)
1.XP Supplemental Files- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-40062 (If you can't figure out how to install both items in this, than post back and i'll help)
2.Thinkpad Configuration Utility- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4ZFRG3 Use this to disable any unused ports, set screen brightness on battery, etc
3.Battery Maximiser- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-44226
4.Video MPEG Features- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... SHY-46FRPA After installing this,it will put a DVD Player icon in the start menu....
I also suggest putting in a cheap DVD that would start right up,instead of asking to install a player, and put a check in always do selected action and highlight Media player, that way it starts playing when you put in the DVD,and doesn't ask you every time....
I was having trouble navigating around the IBM site, sometimes would work, sometimes not....if not go to the home page, click support, personal computing, driver matrices,thinkpad,770 series, and ALL the drivers are listed there, for every flavour of 770....
Let me know how you make out....
I just tried the links after posting this, first time didn't work...second time did....go figure...

P.S..
I bet the 2 sticks of 128MB you installed are PC100,right...???....The 770\E\ED series will only take 1 stick of PC100 along with a stick of PC66 in the other slot, and the PC66 32Mb onboard(soldered on the bottom of the sys board, and not removable)...otherwise it will only see half of the second stick...The 770X\Z on the other hand, has a removable onboard PC66 chip, that if you take it apart and replace with a PC100 stick, and use PC100 for the other slots,it will use it all,AND bump the FSB to 100Mhz instead of 66Mhz..!!! ..
So unless you buy a PC66 chip to replace one of the PC100 ones, you're stuck with it only seeing half the second stick...
When I had my ED I went with a PC100 256Mb chip for a 390X thinkpad (must be 8 small chips per side,not 4),and a stick of PC66 128Mb,for a total of 416Mb
If you're not sure what your chips are,try swapping slots and see what happens....these were picky in which slot ,what memory was in it.....worth a try...
And if your LCD inverter gives up(screen all of a sudden goes off,but can still see very faintly, and works fine on an external monitor)...buy # 12J0445 for around 20 bucks instead of the 10l1660(or whatever it is) for 150..!!!
And just for your info...I've tried numerous DVD drives and the only one I tried that would play burnt DVD+R's is the Toshiba drive...FRU#05k9014 ...easy way to tell them apart is the Toshiba one has the drive light built right into the eject button, the others, the light is on the drive face......or buy a DVD\CD-RW bare laptop drive and swap out the drive out of the drive case...what I did...one time...LOL
Have Fun..!!!

Follow up.
Here's what I did to get my DEVA MPEGCD1M to work with XP Pro :
I deleted the broken "Multimedia" driver from the devices list and restarted the computer. The computer said it found new hardware, but I didn't let it install anything, even though it was begging me.
Then I downloaded the MPTPCW98.EXE file from Lenovo.com and ran it. It created a directory called C:\Drivers\W9X\MPEG and stuffed some files in it.
Then I went to "Add Hardware" and it found the DEVA (but didn't know what it was). I told it I would load the software from a disk and pointed it at the MPEG directory.
The computer found the files it wanted and installed them. Then I used the latest Thinkpad configuration utility to ensure that the DEVA was enabled.
I tried it with MediaPlayer 10, and with the InterActual Player 2.0 and it works great with no more choppy playback.
Thanks Sickofit and GomJabbar !
