Does HD need jumper? What non-IBM optical drives work? T43

#1 Post by nasshi » Thu Aug 04, 2005 3:03 pm

I ordered an OEM hard drive and NEC DVD-RW drive for my T43. I have also installed a MiniPCI card. I have three questions.

1) The hard drive did not come with a jumper to denote master or slave. Is this necessary to have or will the bios assume master without the jumper? On linux boxes I would make, no jumper worked fine, but I'm not sure if that's because the HD and CDROM were on separate IDE channels.

2) My NEC DVD-RW doesn't fit! :( It's an ND-6650A and it's too tall. Specs say it's 12.9mm tall. When looking at IBM's ultrabays, they say they're 0.5in, which is 12.7mm. Does anyone know if a list of slim DVD-RWs and combo drives with appropriate Thinkpad form factors exists?

3) Regarding the MiniPCI card - black is main and gray is auxilliary, right? Neither cables were labeled but I thought it would function just like TV and radio wires.

I love this forum - very useful. I'm glad I found it. Thanks for the help. :D

It's possible that none of the stuff you ordered is going to work.

1) IBM has some check for certain types of HD. People hate this ...
Please see the sticky page "Firmware Problems with Seagate 100g Drive on T43" for details.

2) T43 slim bay expects 9.5mm drive, not the 12.9 or 12.7 mm drive. So the NEC ND-6650A won't work. So far....UJ-812B or UJ-822B will work.

3) You got it wong. Grey is main, black is Aux.
mini-PCI....well....where did you buy it? From IBM? If not, you'd better cancel the order. IBM has this check for unauthorized mini-PCI. For T42 and all previous version, it's called Error message 1802 (maybe the error message number for T43....I don't know). There is actually a CMOS hack to get away with it, and that hack works for T42 and X40, .....but unfortunately, not for T43.

wow...so much for my idea of buying non-IBM hard drive and optical drive. that saved me about $300 i think. and i didn't know the fan noise was such a problem.

i'll switch the minipci cables around. the wireless card is from IBM.

maybe i should go for a T42...bleh. i dunno.

sorry guys all ibm t series notebooks came with ultra slim bay slot with 9.5 mm height and not a typical 12.7 mm height slot which accounts for 95 % of the cd, dvd, and dvd burner for notebooks out there. therefore you can only buy ibm cd, dvd, or dvd burner drive from ibm. hp also makes 9.5 mm height ultra slim drive as well, but it's as expensive as ibm drive if not more expensive.
