Wait.. I nominate Message Center for the "crap" award.
The rest can stay.
Actually, I uninstalled Rescue&Recovery since I have other preferred backup solutions, and R&R kept popping up annoying "Did you change your password or install software?" windows.
The IBM Access Connections is awesome.
So is the Presentation Manager, for those of us that roam between different projectors often.
The rest ranges from "mostly harmless" (EasyEject?) to Neato (Hard Disk APS)

Yes, I forgot that one. Ranks right down at the bottom with Update Connector. Thanks.Ground Loop wrote:Wait.. I nominate Message Center for the "crap" award. The rest can stay.

I keep forgetting that I have Startup Cop V1.1 running which is no longer freely available. Sad, because Startup Cop does the best job I ever saw of permanently disabling things like ibmmessages from running. So I never see Message Center and I forgot about it.

I just use msconfig, is startup cop better?jdhurst wrote:Yes, I forgot that one. Ranks right down at the bottom with Update Connector. Thanks.Ground Loop wrote:Wait.. I nominate Message Center for the "crap" award. The rest can stay.

Something like R&R has tendrils everywhere, services, startup, DLLs...
Instead of dorking around with internal settings using msconfig, services.msc, and 3rd party tools, why not just Uninstall it using its own install tool?
You can always put it back by reinstalling it.
I'm finding that all the IBM tools are pretty easy to remove/reinstall, and it leaves the system in a better state than Disabling or shunting things..

I don't use it either, but people who are legally blind might use it. One of my friends is indeed legally blind, is a capable and successful tax auditor for the Federal Government and uses very, very low screen resolution to aid the very little sight he does have. ... I must be missing something obvious, because it's proclaimed as a feature. What is it used for?

You can probably best answer your own question through exploration and experimentation.ps24eva wrote:Please help me answer my original question:
which softwares are REQUIRED for the T43 to work properly?
I believe you will find that NONE of the IBM software is required to install, boot, or use Windows XP. If the default Microsoft device drivers for critical parts like HD and ethernet work for you, then you're all set. You can thumb your nose at IBM and download nothing at all.
It's all "added value" stuff.. things to take advantage of extra features (APS) or make life easier (Managers).

does everyone agree?
I just looked through this thread as I grapple with IBM apps and wondered what DLA does?
Also, what is the best way of dealing with Rapid Restore? I want to keep the option of reinstalling the factory image on the HDD in an emergency but don't really want unneeded software running all the time. Can I uninstall R&R?
Also (again) is Update Connector required for the Software installer to work properly, or can I uninstall it with no worries?

DLA stands for Drive Letter Access. If you want to use a CD/RW disk like a floppy or hard disk to copy programs to, this is the application to do it with. One downside is that you need a reader on the computer to read the CD/RW disk. It is read differently than a normal CD/R or CD-ROM.pipspeak wrote:I just looked through this thread as I grapple with IBM apps and wondered what DLA does?
If you have the Recovery CD set, you can always restore the hard drive to original. If you do, all data on the hard drive will be erased.pipspeak wrote:Also, what is the best way of dealing with Rapid Restore? Rescue and Recovery is used with Rapid Restore Ultra 4.0. The way I understand it, Rescue and Recovery is way to boot up from the service partition (hidden partition), or from the Rescue Media CD, (I supposed it is used in Windows as well) to restore a backup made with the Rapid Restore Ultra 4.0 program. Supposedly you can also copy files off of a non booting hard disk to another media.
AFAIK you do not need this with the newer ThinkVantage Software Installer.pipspeak wrote:Also (again) is Update Connector required for the Software installer to work properly, or can I uninstall it with no worries?
DKB
I just uninstall the power management and use battery maximiser instead which seems to be better and have the same or even more function than the power managemet. But when I ran the software installer, it marked this power management in yellow which stands for "highly recommended" I guess. Can I just uninstall it or it's necessary for the system to work, I haven't found anything wrong so far.
