There is a tab on the top of the cable plug. You must compress or squeeze the top and the bottom of the plug for this locking tab to disengage from the jack. If you have one of those ethernet cables with a boot over the plug, it can be hard sometimes to press the tab down far enough. If need be, you can press down on the top of the plug, next to your laptop, with a flat bladed screwdriver or something simular, while gently pulling the plug out.

It has to be the tab that's causing the problem. Push the plug in, then press the tab down with a flat head screw driver now try and pull it out. If that doesn't work confirm that the tab is moving down inside the notebook when you depress it. If it is not you will have to insert a small flat head screw driver just above the tab to ensure that it does go down then pull the cable out.

Be very carefull!!!

Once you've exhausted the upper tab possibilities, consider that one or more of the eight "finger" wires in the bottom side of the jack may have become distorted and entangled in the plug.

I don't know how, but if they were bent out of position, they could be lodged into the "grooves" on the RJ-45 plug.

You might try taking a sheet of thin stiff (photo?) paper or plastic and sliding it around the connector, pushing it between the plug and jack on all sides. That might dislodge whatever is retaining it.

But I still think a wedged tab is more likely..

Good luck!

Assuming Ground Loop to be correct, you have problems that will require service attention. I had this happen on the on-board ethernet jack (wires entangled) on my PC300PL desktop machine. I eventually got the plug out, but the jack was damaged. I removed the jack from the motherboard but was not able to get a replacement (and removing it was quite difficult). I wound up using a PIC Network board and all is well. You might have to either replace the motherboard or use a PCMCIA network adapter. ... JD Hurst
