'HOT' deal!

#1 Post by GomJabbar » Sat Aug 06, 2005 9:24 pm

I was browsing another forum and ran across what I thought was a 'HOT' deal. What do you think?

I'm wondering why the guy was so stupid as to buy it without making the seller turn it on. Don't know why anybody would buy a notebook they can see and handle without turning it on. I can't feel sorry for the guy, he should have known better.

Who the hell buys a ThinkPad T30 "off the streets"? That just screams "stolen goods".

I don't feel sorry for the person at all.

Ummmmmm, I think you need to re-read the book!

The gom jabbar is the needle device that the Bene Jesserit Reverend Mother Mohiam holds against Paul's neck while he's tested by the pain box!

"Gom jabbar, an instrument that poisons and kills instantly."

Put your reading glasses on James.

Quote from the above link: According to the Dune novel, the Gom Jabbar is "The high-handed enemy; that specific poison needle tipped with meta-cyanide used by Bene Gesserit Proctors in the death-alternative test of human awareness".

I just took a fresh look at the link I originally posted. It looks like the OP in the link referenced is feeling some heat from his 'HOT' deal.

I've got them on, the Gom Jabbar is the same device Allia uses to kill the Baron Karkonen!

It's a syringe containing meta-cyanide!

I don't know where you're getting the "High-handed enemy" definition from, it's not in either the book or movie.

Here's the exact language contained in the movie script:

PAUL: What's in the box?

REVEREND MOTHER: Pain.

Just then, she raises one hand to his neck. Paul sees a glint of metal. He tries to back away.

REVEREND MOTHER: (The Voice) STOP! Put your hand in the box.

Paul's hand goes in. Fear passes over his face.

REVEREND MOTHER: I hold at your neck the gom jabbar. Don't pull away or you'll feel that poison. A Duke's son must know about many poisons -- this one kills only animals.

PAUL: Are you suggesting a Duke's son is an animal?

REVEREND MOTHER: Let us say I suggest you may be human. Your awareness may be powerful enough to control your instincts. Your instincts will be to remove your hand from the box. If you do so you will die. You will feel an itching -- there... see? Now the itching becomes burning... heat, upon heat, upon heat.

I'll have to dig out my ancient printed copy and check it for any reference, but I haven't been able to find a definitive one online.

“Stop!” she snapped.
Using the Voice again! He swung his attention back to her face.
“I hold at your neck the gom jabbar,” she said. “The gom jabbar, the high-handed enemy. It's a needle with a drop of poison on its tip. Ah-ah! Don't pull away or you'll feel that poison.”

You need to brush up on the Terminology of the Imperium!

When you dig out your ancient printed copy of DUNE, look through pages 513-533. Seek and you will find. (I don't have a copy of DUNE at my present location, so I can't give you the exact page number that references the gom jabbar).

according to the dune encyclopedia:

"gom jabbar or High-handed enemy - the needle tipped with a drop of meta-cyanide wich was used by the bene gesserit proctors in the human awareness test most often administered to students at the bg school on wallach IX. there isno known antidote"
"also used as an analouge of the poisoned needle, used against an enimy. perhaps the best example of the phenomenon was alia atreides who as a child slew her maernal grandfather siridar-baron vladimir harkonnen. her final words to him on this occasion are reputed to have been Im sorry grandfather. youve met the atreides gom gabbar a pretty piece of irony" :D

"A rose by any other name...."

It still means that this definition of "high-handed enemy" is a used syringe!

I just think it's a somewhat strange pseudonym.

Alas, a gom jabbar by any other name is not a 'syringe'. It is a poison-tipped weapon.
As far as being 'used', I won't argue about that.

(A Google search for Gom Jabbar brought up 6,510 hits. Add the word syringe, and you get 6 hits. None of these 6 that were relevant to DUNE had syringe and Gom Jabbar in the same sentence.)
