X31 overheating problem

#1 Post by jazzaddict » Sun Aug 07, 2005 1:41 pm

Hi guys...i wonder if it's normal to have a X31 running at full speed, 1.4Ghz cooking at almost 65 degree? sometimes the temperature can reach 68 degree

If you've only got an 8% CPU load, why is it running at full speed?

Go into power settings and set the CPU as adaptive on both battery and AC.

Fan running????

What is the normal operating temperature for an X31 when it's running at 600mhz?

What do you recommend doing if it's been running in the upper 50's? For example, 600mhz, 58c, HDD @ 53c. mobmeter reports "passive cooling" at 85.5c

1. Undervolt (if not already done)
2. Check the fan.
3. Check ambient temperature. If it's very high, your comp's temp will be high.
4. If all fails, ignore the temperature. (or dump your X31 into a bucket of ice)

Something is REALLY wrong with your computer. I'm pretty sure it's the motherboard though....

It's summer in the northern hemisphere and overheating PCs is a common occurrence especially when the ambient temperature gets above 30C/85F.

My X31 has been running at 55C to 67C lately and the fan has been running a lot of the time. I got the temperature readings using MobileMeter.

I went into the IBM Battery MaxiMIZER wizard and created a new Power Scheme. Setting the CPU to Adaptive let it run at 600MHz instead of 1.6GHz all of the time. The temps stay in the mid to high 40s now.

BTW, to change an existing Scheme, hover the mouse pointer over the middle of the scheme description and left click on it. It only works on schemes that you've created. You get a little delete or modify menu. You need to configure the Scheme in both Battery and AC by clicking on the little icon in the lower right of the window. It's not very intuitive.

There are a lot of things that you can check before you send it back for service. There's a chance they might screw things up worse. It could get jostles around in transit to and from IBM or even lost. It could be a software problem. You should remove your HDD before sending a TP in for service. If you don't, very likely you'll get a system back that the HDD has been formatted and clean factory load installed.

There could be some malware using up a lot of resources. Run AdAware, Spybot and at least 1 AV scanner. Check to see what services are running. There are some good sites with recommendations on which services to disable.

1. How do you undervolt an x31?
2. The fan turns on sometimes. I can't tell if the trigger is higher temperartures (well into the 60s) or higher processor speed
3. Ambient is 25c-30c
4. Dumping in ice risks water damage or other problems

EDIT: does wifi cause it to run hotter? It seems to have been running hotter since I installed an a/b/g mini-pci. Using wired instead of wifi appears to have caused the temperature to drop 5c in the last 10 mins. Will test more.

Temp did not go back up when I switched from wired to wifi. Odd.
