T43 15" 2687DUU Keyboard question

#1 Post by ifuleu2001 » Mon Aug 08, 2005 12:14 am

All Keyboard FRU # for T43 15.0 inch LCD models
NMB ---- ALPS ----Chicony
39T0643 39T0704 39T0765
93P4780 93P4840 13N9893

I have a 39T0704 (ALPS) installed on my 2687DUU. I'm not happy with it. I called Lenovo Tech Support and asked them to send me the 39T0643 (NMB). But the Support guy told me that the NMB keyboard won't fit into my particular model! He said the only keyboard that's going to fit in my laptop is the 39T0704.

Is this really true? :(

I think this is true as they had to send me a new keyboard for mine and it was the only one that would work had to wait about 10 days to get it.

No Thai made NMB for me?

#3 Post by ifuleu2001 » Mon Aug 08, 2005 7:13 am

So this means no Thai NMB for me?! How could that be possible?

Aren't the 15" NMB and ALPS exactly the same in size?

they may be the same but could be a different number of pins on the plug in cable.....not sure but I did ask for it and they said that the one I had was the only one that would fit it......they were even on backorder for about a week before they shipped it to me......

That's terrible... I just ordered a 15" NMB keyboard hoping that I could somehow replace the ALPS. Reality hurts!

I installed the CHC. I bought a new pair of glasses. I called four times to Lenovo and finally got the NMB shipped to me. I spent 30 hours with my new T43 over the past three days. I also slept with it last night thinking that some love might change its behavior...

What else you want me to do?
Listen, if you don't take the NMB, you will have to go!! :!:

I will. I really like the overall feel of this machine, a really nice piece of engineering. I'm sure there are ways to let the NMB fit into this laptop. Need to talk to a electrical engineer.

Just put the Thai keyboard in! It worked!! Now I'm happy with everything about this laptop except the fan noise. I will keep it for another week and do a few more tweaks and see if I can tolerate the noise level.

I just called TS about mine (same model, same keyboard). According to the rep, they can't order a specific one, just a keyboard, and the system automatically decides which one to send based on availability.

Not really what I wanted to hear.

Ok, called back and this rep had no problem doing it. I have a 39T0643 in the mail for me. I currently have a 39T0704 installed, and not to fond of it. Occasionally I don't push hard enough for a key (bad typing), and it's noisy.

I've also found that it isn't very smooth. The keys have resistence, but it kinda jolts more than I'm used to. Hopefully the NMB won't do that.

Get this: a NMB for a 14" T43 arrived :?

Called, and they are sending me a 15". Not sure if it will ship out tonight or not.

Regardless, I asked for a mailing label to send this 14" back, and the guy said it's a souvenir... suggested I use it as a christmas gift. I guess it's not worth the cost to them. Go fugure.

Oh well. I just hope it arrives correctly this time.

Did you get it yet? I'm quite curious as to any difference in the feel of the keyboard.

Yes, arrived next morning. Works great. Much quieter, and has a better feel. I can type faster on this one without problems.

How do you determine which "model" you have. I know that I don't have the Thai one - my parents T43 does and it's a really different feel. Much quieter too. Does changing the keyboard change the warranty?

@Alison

I have a 14.1" T42, with apparently the Chicony keyboard. My keyboard part number is listed as 08K4986, but I could not find it listed on IBM.

To find your keyboard part number, there are a couple of ways.
1. Press the blue Access IBM key, click on Get Help & Support > System information > Warranty & parts. Scroll down the list to see the descriptions and part numbers for most of the major parts in the ThinkPad.
2. Go to: Link: Parts Lookup and enter your system information.
3. Remove the keyboard and check the attached label.

Once you find the keyboard part number, check to see if you find it in the following list - Link: Keyboard service parts - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p

BTW, the Thai keyboard is the NMB. Apparently on the Thai model, you can see some blue under the arrow keys.

@alison

You have an ALPS keyboard. AFAIK, this is a Chinese keyboard.

So if I wanted to request a thai keyboard (or buy one) how do I know which one will fit? (Sorry if this is a newbie question)

@ alison

You got it, the 08K5044 is the US Thai model for the 14.1" T42.

It's funny, I can find the make of the keyboard for your T42 on IBM's site, but I cannot find the make of the keyboard for my T42! I've spent some hours searching on IBM's site and with Google without definitive results. Just someone's post on a forum that he thought the 08K4986 was a Chicony. :?

EDIT: I just entered 08K5044 in the Maintenance Parts Order page on IBM's site and it indicates part not found. This is the same page that I entered 13N9957 to find your existing keyboard. It sure is frustrating that you can't find good part numbers on IBM's site. :x
