IBM Update Connector

#1 Post by Leon » Sat Jun 26, 2004 12:16 pm

Can't get it to work on my T42... keeps saying "An Error Occurred Connecting To the IBM HelpCenter". I can't believe that a big company like IBM would leave an issue like this open for long since it ships on every laptop (am I naive?)......

I too got that message earlier today...but I think theres an alternative to using that program.

Go to the IBM Multiple File Download site, and let it automatically detect your system.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... date=false

What comes back is a list of all the drivers and utilities that you need (and probably have) on your Thinkpad. Either look for the update(s) you think you need, or want, etc, and click on them to see extended info and the download links. Check the version number, and compare it to the version you have installed (theres some program you can run that tells you the version of all installed IBM components....forgot how to get to it, but i'll edit when i do) and download and install the update.

I only use IBM Update Connector when I do a fresh recovery, and I'm too lazy to download all the drivers. Sometimes I run it just to see how it works, and it ususally does work. But I got error messages too. The probleme is probably with the Update server, and not the software. I'm using 5.32, but I've heard that T42s have version 6.0. Any visible difference?

Just checked it. Got the same error message you had. So I guess the server is down. Try it later tonight or tomorrow.

I have Update Connector 5.32 on two machines (Desktop and Laptop). It is not working on either machine right now (can't connect). The server may be down - that is usually the case. But on my T41 Laptop, Symantec Client Security is blocking with a Firewall error. I'll try it later or tomorrow with the firewall temporarily disabled. ... JDHurst

I've got Update Connector 6.0 with my T42p and I get to various messages, from the "Error" message at 32% on the first screen, to bombing out at 15% when scanning my machine to actually all the way past that and the system summary screen to looking for the latest updates and hanging at 66%. Hasn't worked all day for me, as I recall.

When I first got my T42, I downloaded the new updated Access IBM. It's a bad idea if you also don't update the 2200b/g driver, don't know about the other cards.

If you did update the Access IBM program without the wireless driver, go to ibm.com, and download the newest driver for your wireless card. It really will help. You'll actually find a help file on the support site telling you about this issue.

BTW, I still get stuck at 32% sometimes, but it works otherwise.

FWIW, the only thing mine has needed (if I recall correctly) was that 2200B/G driver.

I've looked at the T42 driver matrix page but there's no Update Connector there and the latest version I can find elsewhere on the IBM site is 5.32.

Anyone know where I can download a copy of version 6.0?

P.S. Although this doesn't help me (I've tried UC with ZoneAlarm completely disabled without success) it may help others who use a software firewall
